Okuma OSP Alarm A 8609 - Axis overheat

Axis overheat

The control detected an overheat condition in a drive motor; Code 1 identifies the spindle motor as the overheated unit. Continued running risks permanent motor damage, so the machine must be stopped and cooled before the cause is corrected.

Common Causes

  • Cutting under sustained overload conditions heating the spindle motor
  • High motor load caused by insufficient slideway lubrication increasing axis friction
  • Faulty spindle motor (winding or bearing failure)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = Spindle motor overheat
  2. 2Turn off the power supply and allow the motor to cool down, as directed by the manual, before attempting any restart.
  3. 3Review the recent cutting conditions: reduce spindle load, feed or depth of cut if the machine was running heavy continuous cuts.
  4. 4Check the slideway lubrication system: verify oil level, that the lube pump cycles, and that oil is reaching the ways; poor lubrication raises motor load and heat.
  5. 5After cooling, run the spindle at low speed unloaded and monitor temperature and load; abnormal heat or noise with no cutting load points to the spindle motor itself.
  6. 6If the motor overheats again under light conditions, have the spindle motor inspected or replaced.
