Okuma OSP Alarm A 8561 - Grinding whl spindle motor overload

Grinding whl spindle motor overload

The watt meter monitoring the grinding wheel (whetstone) spindle motor detected an overload condition. Either the H2 alarm tripped while the wheel was rotating, or the H1 overload signal stayed on longer than the allowed time during a G00 rapid move.

Common Causes

  • H1 (overload) or H2 (gap) threshold set incorrectly on the watt meter
  • Grinding wheel speed set too high for the cut, overloading the motor
  • Faulty watt meter or its current transformer

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = Watt meter H2 (gap) alarm signal turned ON while the grinding wheel was rotating; code 2 = Watt meter H1 overload signal stayed ON longer than the set time during a G00 commanded move
  2. 2Read the code: Code 1 means the watt meter H2 (gap) signal turned ON during wheel rotation; Code 2 means the H1 overload signal stayed ON longer than the set time during a G00 command.
  3. 3Check the grinding load: reduce depth of cut or feed and verify the wheel is not rubbing or loaded with swarf, which drives motor power up.
  4. 4Verify the whetstone speed setting is correct for the wheel and operation; an excessive speed setting is a listed cause.
  5. 5Check the H1 and H2 threshold settings on the watt meter against the intended values; a mis-set trip point causes nuisance alarms.
  6. 6If settings and load are correct, isolate power and observe lockout before opening the cabinet, then test the watt meter and its transformer; replace the faulty unit.
