Okuma OSP Alarm A 1848 - Chuck grip failure

Chuck grip failure

The chuck failed to grip the workpiece when the close command was executed, or a spindle rotation command was given while the closed chuck held nothing. The control detected this from the chuck close limit switch state and stopped to prevent spinning an ungripped or poorly gripped part.

Common Causes

  • Workpiece mis-seated, too short, or wrong jaw position so the chuck closed on nothing
  • Chuck close limit switch out of adjustment, tripping before proper grip
  • Faulty chuck close limit switch giving a false or missing grip confirmation
  • Low hydraulic pressure or chuck actuator problem preventing full clamping

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Open the chuck, re-seat the workpiece correctly against the jaws or stop, and try chucking again as the manual directs.
  2. 2Verify the part diameter and jaw stroke are within the chuck's gripping range so the jaws actually close onto material.
  3. 3With the chuck closed on a part, check that the chuck close limit switch changes state at the correct clamped position; adjust the switch if it trips early or late.
  4. 4Test the chuck close limit switch electrically for reliable operation and replace it if it is intermittent or dead.
  5. 5If the switch is good but grip is still weak, check hydraulic chucking pressure at the gauge before running the spindle.
