Okuma OSP Alarm A 1843 - Workpiece rest interlock

Workpiece rest interlock

A work rest (workpiece stand) move command, or a spindle/axis/tailstock/chuck command, was issued while the work rest, tailstock sleeve, chuck, turret, or axis positions did not satisfy the interlock conditions. The control blocked the command to prevent collision between the work rest, workpiece, tailstock, and turret.

Common Causes

  • Work rest up/middle/down or insertion/removal commanded while the spindle is rotating or the work rest is not in the required position
  • Tailstock sleeve not at retract end, tailstock not advanced, or chuck not unclamped when the work rest command requires it
  • X-axis or turrets A/B not at positive limits, or touch setter not retracted, before a work rest up command
  • Tow-along tailstock coupled to the work rest while an axis command is issued, or Z/ZB axis motor overload during coupled motion

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = Work rest move commanded while spindle was moving, or rest not at down position during spindle motion; code 2 = Up-to-middle move commanded with tailstock sleeve not at retract end; code 3 = Middle-to-up move commanded with tailstock sleeve not at retract end; code 4 = Insertion/removal (right/left slide) command with tailstock sleeve not at retract end; code 5 = M545/M546 commanded with the rest at work-out (up) position or stopped mid-stroke; code 6 = M543/M544 commanded with the rest at escape (down) position or stopped mid-stroke; code 7 = Rest up/down command (M544/M543) with rest not at retract end; code 8 = Axis command in AUTO/MDI with the rest connected to the tow-along tailstock
  2. 2Read the code and match it to the violated condition, e.g.: 1=spindle moving during rest move or rest not down, 2/3/4/17=tailstock sleeve not at retract end, 5/6=wrong rest position for M543-M546, 8=axis command with tow-along tailstock connected, 9=Z axis motor load over 70% for 0.1 s with tow-along connected, 20=ZB move with tailstock not retracted or chuck not unclamped, 21=ZB overload while chucking, 26/28/39=spindle rotation with rest not at the required position.
  3. 3Stop the spindle and confirm zero speed before issuing any work rest up/middle/down or insertion/removal command (codes 1, 27, 42).
  4. 4Retract the tailstock sleeve fully to the retract end and verify the retract-end signal before commanding work rest moves (codes 2, 3, 4, 7, 17).
  5. 5Unclamp the chuck and verify the chuck unclamp confirmation before work rest insertion/removal or up commands (codes 30, 36, 42, 47).
  6. 6Move the X-axis and turrets A/B to their positive limits and retract the touch setter before commanding the work rest up (codes 15, 22, 24, 44, 49).
  7. 7For codes 8, 9, and 21, disconnect the tow-along tailstock from the work rest before axis moves, and investigate the cause of the Z/ZB axis overload (binding, excessive workpiece weight, mechanical obstruction) before retrying.
  8. 8If the rest is physically in the commanded position but the alarm persists, inspect the work rest position confirmation switches (up/middle/down, insertion/removal, securing pin) for misadjustment or failure.
