Okuma OSP Alarm A 1833 - Tow-along steady rest unclamp interlock

Tow-along steady rest unclamp interlock

An unclamp (or clamp) command was issued to the tow-along steady rest while the required machine conditions were not met. The control blocked the action to prevent the steady rest from releasing while the spindle is turning, the axes are out of position, or the clamp state feedback is inconsistent.

Common Causes

  • Unclamp commanded while the spindle was still rotating
  • XA-axis not positioned at the positive variable limit, or ZA-axis not at the carriage return position
  • Steady rest not at its retract end before unclamping
  • Clamp and unclamp confirmation switches both ON or both OFF (faulty switch or wiring)
  • Command issued in Y-axis control mode, or turret not at 90 degrees / not holding a dummy tool or empty station

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = Unclamp commanded during spindle rotation; code 2 = Unclamp commanded without XA-axis at the positive variable limit; code 3 = Unclamp commanded without the steady rest at the retract end; code 4 = Clamp and unclamp confirmation signals both ON or both OFF; code 5 = Unclamp commanded while in Y-axis control mode; code 6 = Clamp/unclamp commanded when the steady rest was not in the matching clamp/unclamp state; code 7 = Unclamp commanded when the steady rest was not in unclamp state; code 8 = Unclamp commanded without ZA-axis at the concatenation carriage return place
  2. 2Read the code on screen and match it to the failed condition before doing anything else.
  3. 3Code 1: stop the spindle completely, then re-issue the steady rest unclamp command.
  4. 4Code 2: move the XA-axis to the positive variable limit before unclamping. Code 8: position the ZA-axis at the concatenation carriage return place first.
  5. 5Code 3: travel the steady rest fully to its retract end and confirm it is seated there before unclamping.
  6. 6Code 4: the clamp and unclamp confirmation signals are both ON or both OFF; inspect the two confirmation limit switches/proximity switches and their wiring for a stuck or failed switch.
  7. 7Code 5: cancel Y-axis control mode before commanding unclamp. Code 9: index the turret to angle 90 and make sure the station holds a dummy tool or no tool.
  8. 8Codes 6 and 7: the command does not match the actual steady rest state; verify the rest is genuinely clamped or unclamped (check the confirmation switches) and issue the correct command for its current state.
