Okuma OSP Alarm A 1711 - ZA-axis overload

ZA-axis overload

The load detection meter relay for the Z-axis of the A-turret stayed ON longer than the set detection time, meaning the ZA-axis was mechanically overloaded. The machine stops the axis to protect the ball screw, bearings and motor.

Common Causes

  • Program error: feedrate too large or depth of cut too large
  • Meter relay setting value too small (trips at normal load)
  • Detection time setting too small (trips on brief load spikes)
  • Mechanical binding on the ZA axis slide or ball screw

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Check the cutting program for the A-turret Z-axis: reduce an excessive feedrate or depth of cut that would overload the axis during machining.
  2. 2Inspect the load detection meter relay setting for the ZA-axis; if the set trip value is too small, normal cutting load will trip it, so correct the setting.
  3. 3Check the overload detection time setting; a value set too short will trip on harmless load spikes, so set an appropriate detection time.
  4. 4Jog the ZA-axis with no cutting load and watch the load meter; high load at idle indicates mechanical binding, so inspect the slideway lubrication, ball screw and way covers.
  5. 5After corrections, run a test cut with gradually increasing load while monitoring the load meter to confirm it stays below the trip level.
