Fanuc Alarm 604 - n AXIS: AMP. COMMUNICATION ERROR

SERVO ALARM 604

Communication between the SVM and PSM failed. Check connections between servo amplifier modules and FSSB cable.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 604 indicates a communication failure on the FSSB (Fiber Servo Serial Bus) or high-speed serial communication link between the CNC control unit and the servo amplifier module for the specified axis. This is most commonly caused by damaged FSSB optical fiber cables, loose connections at the amplifier or control unit, or a failed servo amplifier. The alarm prevents axis motion as the control cannot communicate with the drive.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the machine completely. Inspect all FSSB cable connections at the servo amplifier module (SVM) and at the PSM/control unit. Ensure the orange fiber optic cables are fully seated and locking tabs are engaged.

Do not bend FSSB cables at radius less than 40mm. Disconnect power before handling cables.

  2. 2

Check FSSB cable for visible damage including kinks, excessive bending, cuts, or contamination at the optical connectors. Clean optical connectors with lint-free swabs and isopropyl alcohol if contamination is present.

Never look directly into fiber optic cable ends while power is applied - laser light can damage eyes.

  3. 3

Replace FSSB cables one at a time if damage is found. After reconnection, power up and check LED status on the servo amplifier. LED 'FSSB' should be steady green. Flashing red indicates continued communication error.

  4. 4

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO > and check FSSB communication status for the affected axis. Parameter 8181 (FSSB channel assignment) should show correct axis allocation. Verify alarm clears after cable replacement.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·SVM or PSM module replacement required
  • ·Multiple servo axes affected simultaneously
  • ·Alarm persists after cable and parameter checks

Prevention

  • Perform monthly FSSB cable connection inspections
  • Monitor servo module temperatures to prevent thermal damage
  • Keep parameter backups current
  • Maintain proper EMI shielding and grounding

Common Mistakes

  • Not waiting for capacitor discharge before handling modules
  • Mixing FSSB cable types or generations
  • Ignoring intermittent connection issues
  • Failing to backup parameters before module replacement
