Fanuc Alarm 400 - Servo Overload Detected

Servo Overload

Motor or drive overload condition. The servo overload has exceeded its rated current capacity and may be at risk of thermal damage.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 400 indicates the servo amplifier has detected an overload condition on the specified axis, meaning the motor is drawing excessive current or torque demand exceeds safe limits. This is a protective alarm triggered when the amplifier's integrated overload monitoring detects sustained high load, preventing motor or amplifier damage.

Safety

  • Stop all motion before inspection
  • Check for collision damage
  • Motor may be hot

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO and check diagnostic screen #201 (servo alarm detail) to identify the specific axis number and alarm sub-code. Record the displayed values for torque and current.

  2. 2

Check diagnostics #720 and #721 (servo load meter) for the affected axis. Values consistently above 80-85% indicate excessive mechanical load. Compare current readings against historical baseline values.

  3. 3

Manually rotate the motor shaft with the servo OFF (parameter P2000#0 SVO=0 or use emergency stop). Check for grinding, tight spots, bearing seizure, or collision with crash debris. Inspect ballscrew/coupling for damage.

Disable high voltage before manual inspection. Use EMERGENCY STOP or disconnect amplifier power.

  4. 4

Inspect way lubrication system and verify adequate oil flow. Check ballscrew nut preload and guide wear. Remove covers and verify no chips, coolant sludge, or foreign objects are obstructing travel.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Motor insulation test fails
  • ·Servo amplifier LED indicates internal fault
  • ·Multiple axes affected simultaneously
  • ·Encoder signal integrity issues confirmed

Prevention

  • Regular lubrication of mechanical components
  • Periodic servo load monitoring via diagnostic #201
  • Proper cutting parameter selection
  • Regular encoder cable inspection at flex points

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual increase in servo load percentages
  • Adjusting servo gains without understanding mechanical issues
  • Failing to check diagnostic displays before troubleshooting
  • Not documenting parameter changes during troubleshooting
