Fanuc Alarm 404 - VRDY Signal Timing Error

VRDY On

VRDY signal is not turned off but position controller ready signal (PRDY) is off. Signal synchronization issue.

Root Cause Summary

FANUC 404 alarm indicates a mismatch between the CNC's axis READY signal (MCON) and the servo amplifier's READY signal (DRDY). This occurs when MCON is OFF but DRDY remains ON, indicating the servo amplifier is not responding properly to CNC commands or there is a connection/interface issue between the CNC and the amplifier.

Safety

  • Power off before inspection

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the system completely. Inspect all interface cables between the CNC control unit and the affected axis servo amplifier. For FSSB systems, check JD1A/JD1B optical fiber connections for damage, contamination, or loose connections. For analog/serial systems, verify CNxx connector integrity.

Ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures before working on connections. Do not disconnect cables while power is applied.

  2. 2

Navigate to SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS > SERVO screen and check diagnostic number 200 (axis control status) and diagnostic 300-307 (FSSB communication status). Verify communication is established for the affected axis number indicated in the alarm.

  3. 3

Check the servo amplifier LED display. A normal READY state shows green LED solid. Red or flashing LEDs indicate amplifier faults. Cross-reference LED codes with amplifier model documentation (αi series: AL### codes, βi series: A### codes).

  4. 4

Verify parameter 1020 (serial interface type: 0=separate, 1=serial, 4=FSSB) matches your hardware configuration. Incorrect settings prevent proper MCON/DRDY handshaking.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo amplifier replacement required
  • ·CNC control I/O board failure suspected
  • ·Multiple servo axes affected simultaneously

Prevention

  • Regular servo interface connection inspection
  • Environmental protection from moisture and contamination
  • Periodic parameter backup and verification

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming alarm is software-related without checking hardware connections
  • Replacing servo amplifier without verifying MCON signal integrity
  • Ignoring servo interface module connection quality
