Fanuc Alarm 406 - SERVO ALARM: n-TH AXIS ZERO POINT RETURN FAILURE

SERVO ALARM: n-TH AXIS ZERO POINT RETURN FAILURE

Reference position return was executed but the reference position could not be reached during grid search operation.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 406 occurs when the CNC cannot complete the reference position return (home) sequence during the grid search phase. This typically indicates the decoder (position coder) grid signal is not being detected, the axis is mechanically prevented from reaching the reference point, or critical reference position parameters are incorrectly set.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS screen and monitor diagnostic number D0300 (Grid signal) for the affected axis while manually jogging near the reference position. Verify the grid signal toggles from 0 to 1 within one encoder rotation.

  2. 2

Check encoder cable connections at both motor and amplifier ends. Inspect for bent pins, loose connectors, or cable damage. For serial pulse coders (αi encoders), verify battery voltage on amplifier (should be >3.0V DC).

Power off machine before disconnecting encoder cables to prevent damage to encoder circuitry

  3. 3

Verify Parameter 1815 (reference position return direction) is set correctly: 0=positive direction, 1=negative direction. Incorrect setting causes axis to move away from grid position during final approach.

  4. 4

Check servo amplifier LED status during homing attempt. Red LED or alternating red/green indicates encoder communication fault. Review alarm history in DIAGNOSIS screen for concurrent SV0401-SV0449 encoder alarms.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo drive fault codes present
  • ·Parameter backup/restore needed
  • ·Mechanical component replacement required

Prevention

  • Regular lubrication maintenance
  • Keep reference dog area clean
  • Periodic encoder cable inspection
  • Backup parameters before changes

Common Mistakes

  • Changing parameters without backup
  • Ignoring mechanical binding signs
  • Not checking dog signal status first
  • Forcing reference return with obstructions present
