Fanuc Alarm 414 - Digital Servo System Error

Digital Servo Alarm

Fanuc alarm 414 is a digital servo alarm. The CNC cannot communicate with or initialize the digital servo for the specified axis. Check the diagnosis screen (parameters 200 and 204) for the specific servo sub-alarm code to identify the root cause.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 414 indicates a servo detection error on the specified axis, typically caused by hardware faults in the motor power circuit, including shorted or damaged motor power cables, insulation breakdown in the motor windings, or failure of the IPM (Intelligent Power Module) in the servo amplifier. The alarm is triggered when the amplifier detects abnormal current flow or feedback errors that prevent proper servo operation.

Safety

  • High voltage present
  • Document all diagnostics

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check the servo amplifier 7-segment LED display for sub-alarm codes (8=L axis abnormal current, 9=M axis abnormal current, A=N axis abnormal current) to identify which axis component is affected.

  2. 2

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > #200 (Servo Alarm Code) and #204 (Servo Alarm Sub-Code) on the CNC control panel to identify detailed fault information for the affected axis.

  3. 3

With machine power OFF and LOTO applied, disconnect motor power cables (U, V, W) at both amplifier and motor ends. Use a megohm meter (500V DC) to test insulation resistance between each phase conductor and ground, and between phases. Acceptable reading should be >10MΩ.

HIGH VOLTAGE: Discharge amplifier capacitors and wait minimum 5 minutes after power-off before touching cables. Use proper PPE and insulated tools.

  4. 4

Inspect motor power cable routing for pinch points, cable track damage, or contact with sharp edges. Replace cables if insulation damage, conductor exposure, or megger test failure is detected. Use only Fanuc-specified shielded motor power cables with proper grounding.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·IPM module replacement required
  • ·Motor winding repair needed
  • ·Persistent alarm after cable/parameter verification

Prevention

  • Regular motor cable inspection and routing checks
  • Maintain proper amplifier cooling and cleanliness
  • Monitor diagnostic 204 for early current anomaly detection
  • Implement preventive motor insulation testing

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring sub-alarm codes on amplifier display
  • Not checking diagnostic 200/204 for detailed fault information
  • Replacing amplifier without testing motor/cables first
  • Clearing alarm without identifying root cause
