Fanuc Alarm 420 - Servo Synchronization Error

Sync Error

Fanuc servo alarm 420: Sync Error. The servo system has detected a fault condition on the specified axis. Check the Fanuc diagnosis screen (DGN 200, 204) for the specific sub-alarm code.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 420 occurs during simple synchronous control when the torque command difference between master and slave axes exceeds the threshold set in parameter 2031. This indicates mechanical binding, improper synchronization setup, or significant load imbalance between the synchronized axes that prevents them from tracking together smoothly.

Safety

  • Risk of mechanical damage
  • Check alignment carefully

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Identify master and slave axes from synchronous control setup. Go to SYSTEM > PARAM and check parameter 1800 (axis control parameter) and parameters 2026-2030 for synchronous control configuration to confirm which axes are paired.

  2. 2

Enter JOG mode and manually move each axis independently. Check for binding, unusual resistance, chips in ways, damaged ballscrews, or seized bearings. Listen for abnormal noise during movement.

Ensure machine is in emergency stop ready condition when manually checking axes

  3. 3

Go to DIAGNOSIS screen and monitor servo load meters for both axes. Navigate to SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS > SERVO and observe displays 300-302 (servo load current) for each axis during synchronized motion. Compare load values between master and slave.

  4. 4

Inspect mechanical couplings, gantry connections, or dual-drive mechanisms for misalignment, loose mounting bolts, worn drive components, or uneven lubrication. Correct any mechanical issues found before re-enabling synchronous control.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Mechanical binding requires machine disassembly
  • ·Servo parameter changes don't resolve alarm
  • ·Encoder replacement needed

Prevention

  • Regular lubrication of synchronized mechanical components
  • Periodic servo tuning verification
  • Monitor sync error trends through maintenance logs

Common Mistakes

  • Setting parameter 2031 too low causing nuisance alarms
  • Mismatching servo gains between synchronized axes
  • Ignoring gradual mechanical wear leading to binding
