Fanuc Alarm 408 - SERVO ALARM: n-TH AXIS SERIAL PULSE CODER ERROR

SERVO ALARM: n-TH AXIS SERIAL PULSE CODER ERROR

Serial pulse coder (encoder) communication error detected. Check encoder cable connections and integrity.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 408 indicates the CNC has lost serial communication with the serial pulse coder (absolute or incremental encoder with serial interface) on the specified axis. This is typically caused by damaged encoder cables, loose connector contacts, encoder power supply failure, or a faulty encoder itself. The alarm triggers when the CPU cannot receive proper position feedback signals through the serial communication protocol.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the machine and visually inspect the encoder cable from the motor to the amplifier. Check for cable pinching, excessive bending near connectors, oil contamination, or physical damage along the entire cable routing path.

Always power down before disconnecting encoder cables to prevent damage to encoder circuitry

  2. 2

Disconnect the encoder cable at both the motor and amplifier ends. Inspect connector pins for bent contacts, corrosion, or contamination. Clean connectors with contact cleaner if needed and verify pins are straight and properly seated.

  3. 3

Check cable continuity using a multimeter on all encoder cable conductors (typically +5V, 0V, DATA+, DATA-, and shield). Verify resistance is less than 1 ohm for power lines and proper continuity on data lines. Replace cable if any open circuits or shorts are detected.

  4. 4

Reconnect cable with proper torque on locking connectors. Power up and observe amplifier LED status. Check DIAGNOSIS > SERVO > SERIAL screen to verify encoder communication is restored. If alarm persists, proceed to next cause.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required on critical production equipment
  • ·Servo amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Oscilloscope testing beyond operator capability

Prevention

  • Implement regular encoder cable inspection schedule
  • Use proper cable management and strain relief
  • Monitor encoder supply voltage during PM activities
  • Keep spare encoder cables in stock for critical axes

Common Mistakes

  • Using non-FANUC encoder cables
  • Ignoring intermittent connection issues
  • Not checking cable impedance after installation
  • Mixing encoder types during troubleshooting
