Fanuc Alarm 601 - n AXIS: INV. RADIATOR FAN FAILURE

SERVO ALARM 601

The external dissipator (radiator) cooling fan of the servo inverter has failed. Inspect and replace the fan.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 601 indicates the cooling fan for the servo amplifier inverter module heat sink (radiator) has failed or is not receiving proper feedback signal. The amplifier's internal monitoring circuit detects fan failure through either lack of rotation signal, insufficient airflow detection, or fan circuit open/short condition, triggering this protective alarm to prevent thermal damage to the power modules.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the CNC and lock out main power. Open the servo amplifier cabinet and visually identify the affected axis inverter module based on alarm message (axis designation n). Locate the external heat sink cooling fan assembly.

Ensure complete power lockout and wait minimum 5 minutes for capacitor discharge before touching amplifier components. Verify with multimeter that DC bus voltage is 0V.

  2. 2

Manually attempt to rotate the fan blade. Check for bearing seizure, accumulated debris, or foreign object obstruction. Inspect fan connector CN** at the amplifier module for proper seating and damaged pins.

Do not force seized fan bearings as fragments may enter the amplifier. Replace entire fan assembly if resistance detected.

  3. 3

With power restored, navigate to DIAGNOSIS screen > SYSTEM > PMC > I/O LINK or SERVO screen to observe fan status signals. For αi series amplifiers, check diagnostic address X***.* for fan feedback bit specific to axis amplifier module.

  4. 4

Replace fan assembly with Fanuc OEM part number (typically A90L-0001-05** series for αiSV amplifiers). Verify fan voltage rating matches amplifier specification (typically 24VDC or 200VAC). Clear alarm with RESET, cycle power, and verify fan rotation and alarm does not return.

Using non-OEM fans may result in incorrect airflow rating or tachometer signal incompatibility causing repeat alarms.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo amplifier internal damage suspected
  • ·Multiple related alarms present
  • ·Repeated fan failures indicate system design issues

Prevention

  • Implement regular cooling system maintenance schedule
  • Monitor ambient temperature conditions
  • Replace air filters per maintenance intervals
  • Keep electrical cabinet areas clean and well-ventilated

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring environmental contamination sources
  • Using incorrect fan replacement parts
  • Failing to verify proper airflow after cleaning
  • Not checking power supply voltage specifications
