Fanuc Alarm 602 - n AXIS: INV. OVERHEAT

SERVO ALARM 602

The servo amplifier has overheated. Check cooling fan, air filter, ambient temperature, and duty cycle.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc alarm 602 (INV. OVERHEAT) indicates the servo amplifier (inverter module) has exceeded its thermal threshold, typically 85-95°C depending on amplifier model. The alarm is triggered by internal thermistors in the power module that monitor IGBT/IPM temperature. This is a protective shutdown to prevent permanent damage to the servo drive components.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check amplifier cooling fan operation. With power on (alarm present), verify fan rotation visually and audibly. For αi/βi servo amplifiers, fan failure often coincides with alarm 602. Replace fan if not operating (typical part: A860-0104-Txxx series).

Ensure proper lockout/tagout before opening cabinet. High voltage present at amplifier terminals.

  2. 2

Inspect and clean/replace cabinet air filters. Check intake and exhaust filters for dust accumulation. Clogged filters reduce airflow by 50% or more, causing thermal buildup even with functional fans.

  3. 3

Verify ambient temperature around servo amplifier. Check DIAGNOSIS screen > SERVO > temperature monitoring (parameters 1611-1614 on 0i/30i/31i systems show servo amp temperature). Ambient should be ≤40°C (104°F) per Fanuc specifications. Use infrared thermometer to measure cabinet internal temperature.

  4. 4

Ensure minimum clearance around amplifier: 100mm (4 inches) above/below for ventilation per Fanuc installation manual. Check for adjacent heat sources (transformers, other amplifiers) that raise local ambient temperature.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo amplifier internal component failure suspected
  • ·Multiple amplifiers showing same alarm simultaneously
  • ·Alarm persists after addressing all cooling and environmental factors

Prevention

  • Establish regular air filter replacement schedule based on shop environment
  • Monitor cabinet temperatures during peak production periods
  • Implement preventive maintenance program for cooling fans
  • Keep spare cooling fans and filters in inventory

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual temperature increases before alarm occurs
  • Running system with cabinet doors open
  • Using incorrect replacement fan specifications
  • Failing to address root cause of excessive servo loading
