Fanuc Alarm 701 - Cooling Fan Failure

Fan Alarm

Fanuc alarm 701: Fan Alarm. A cooling or thermal alarm has been detected. A cooling fan may have failed or a component has exceeded its temperature limit.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 701 OVERHEAT: FAN MOTOR indicates the control unit cooling fan has failed, is obstructed, or the thermistor/thermal sensor has detected insufficient airflow or elevated temperature inside the control cabinet. This alarm protects the CNC control unit, power supply modules, and amplifier cards from thermal damage due to inadequate cooling.

Safety

  • Replace fan soon to prevent overheating

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power OFF the CNC control completely. Open the control cabinet and visually inspect all cooling fans (typically located in rear panel or PSM/Power Supply Module section). Check for physical rotation resistance, bearing noise, or visible damage to fan blades.

Ensure LOCK-OUT/TAG-OUT procedures before opening cabinet. High voltage present even when control appears off.

  2. 2

Check for dust accumulation on fan blades, air intake filters, and heat sink fins. Clean all cooling paths using compressed air (max 30 PSI) or vacuum. Replace air filters if excessively clogged.

  3. 3

Power ON the control and observe fan rotation immediately during boot sequence. If fan does not spin or spins intermittently, measure DC voltage at fan connector (typically 24VDC for control unit fans). Expected voltage: 24VDC ±10%. If voltage present but fan inoperative, replace fan assembly.

  4. 4

After fan replacement or cleaning, navigate to SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS > #0395-#0399 (thermal monitor diagnostics) to verify temperature readings return to normal range (typically 30-45°C for control unit). Reset alarm using RESET key and monitor for recurrence over 30 minutes continuous operation.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·PMC ladder logic corruption detected
  • ·Multiple I/O card failures
  • ·Recurring alarm after fan replacement

Prevention

  • Replace air filters every 3 months
  • Maintain 6-inch clearance around ventilation openings
  • Perform monthly visual inspection of cooling fans
  • Monitor ambient temperature in control cabinet

Common Mistakes

  • Using non-OEM replacement fans without proper tachometer feedback
  • Ignoring clogged filters leading to fan overload
  • Bypassing fan monitoring circuits instead of fixing root cause
  • Operating with cabinet doors open affecting airflow patterns
