Fanuc Alarm 749 - S-SPINDLE LSI ERROR

Spindle Alarm: Speed Fluctuation

Fanuc spindle alarm 749: Spindle Alarm: Speed Fluctuation. The spindle speed has deviated beyond the allowable tolerance from the commanded value, or an abnormal speed condition was detected.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 749 indicates a communication failure or hardware fault with the serial spindle LSI (Large Scale Integration) circuit on the spindle amplifier. This typically occurs when the CNC cannot properly communicate with the spindle amplifier via the serial link, or when the spindle amplifier's LSI circuitry has detected an internal hardware fault.

Safety

  • Unbalanced tools at high speed are dangerous
  • Stand clear of spindle during testing
  • Stand clear of the spindle during testing. Flying debris can cause serious injury.
  • Disconnect power to the machine before performing any electrical troubleshooting. Lockout/Tagout procedures must be followed.
  • Be aware of rotating parts when the spindle is powered on. Keep hands and clothing away from the spindle.
  • High voltages are present in the spindle drive. Only qualified personnel should work on the drive.
  • Allow the spindle to cool down before touching it after running at high speeds. It may be hot.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the machine completely. Inspect the serial spindle cable (optical fiber or cable) between the spindle interface board on the CNC and the spindle amplifier. Check for damage, tight connections at both ends, and proper seating of connectors.

Ensure complete power down before disconnecting any cables to prevent damage to LSI circuits.

  2. 2

Check the spindle amplifier LED display. A communication error typically shows as alternating error codes or no display. Refer to the spindle amplifier manual for LED diagnostic codes specific to your amplifier model (Alpha series shows AL-xx codes).

  3. 3

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > PARAMETER on the control and check diagnostic numbers D0052 (spindle serial communication status) and D0053 (spindle amplifier alarm code). A value of 0 in D0052 indicates no communication.

  4. 4

If using optical fiber cable, clean both ends of the fiber with approved fiber optic cleaner and lint-free cloth. Replace the fiber cable if any physical damage is visible. Verify parameter 4020 (spindle serial channel selection) matches the physical connection.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Amplifier internal faults detected
  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Speed loop tuning needed
  • ·Spindle bearing replacement required

Prevention

  • Perform regular spindle amplifier cooling system maintenance
  • Keep encoder cables away from power cables to prevent EMI
  • Monitor spindle load current trends to detect bearing wear
  • Maintain proper tool balance and holder cleanliness

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring loose serial cable connections during routine maintenance
  • Setting incorrect encoder parameters after amplifier replacement
  • Not checking encoder power supply voltage when troubleshooting feedback issues
  • Attempting to adjust speed loop gains without understanding mechanical root cause
