Fanuc Alarm 752 - Orientation Incomplete

Spindle Orientation Fault

Fanuc spindle alarm 752: Spindle Orientation Fault. The spindle orientation (M19) command failed to complete within the required time or the orientation confirmation was not received.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 752 indicates the spindle amplifier (SPM or Alpha-i series) failed to complete a mode change command (orientation, gear change, or CSS/constant surface speed switching). This is typically caused by serial communication errors on the optical fiber link between CNC and spindle drive, amplifier-side faults preventing mode execution, or incorrect spindle parameter configuration for the requested mode.

Safety

  • Keep clear of spindle during testing

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check spindle amplifier LED status. Alpha-i SPM units show communication status on front panel - steady red ALARM LED or flashing COMM LED indicates serial link failure. Note any displayed alarm codes (SU01, SU02 indicate serial errors).

  2. 2

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS screen, then SYSTEM > PMC > DGN and check spindle serial diagnostics. For 0i/30i/31i systems, check diagnostic numbers 200-207 (SER1-SER8) for spindle axis - all bits should be stable. Bit fluctuations indicate communication instability.

  3. 3

Inspect optical fiber cables between CNC and spindle amplifier (TX/RX connectors JD1A/JD1B on amplifier side, JD10A/JD10B on CNC). Check for bent connectors, contaminated fiber ends, or physical damage. Clean fiber ends with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free swabs if necessary.

Never look directly into active optical fiber connectors - can cause eye damage

  4. 4

Verify parameter 4001#0 (serial spindle selection) is set correctly and parameter 4002 (spindle serial number) matches the amplifier DIP switch or rotary switch setting (typically SP1=01 for first spindle). Mismatch prevents proper communication handshake.

Call a technician if:

  • ·Amplifier hardware replacement needed
  • ·Complex parameter restoration required
  • ·Encoder replacement necessary

Prevention

  • Regular spindle amplifier maintenance
  • Periodic encoder cable inspection
  • Parameter backup maintenance
  • Communication cable strain relief

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring amplifier status LEDs
  • Incorrect parameter restoration
  • Forcing spindle operation with encoder faults
  • Overlooking communication cable issues
