Fanuc Alarm 762 - SECOND SPINDLE MODE CHANGE FAULT

SPINDLE ALARM 762

A mode change command to the second spindle could not be executed. Check second spindle amplifier status and serial communication.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 762 occurs when the CNC issues a spindle mode change command (gear shift, CS mode change, or C-axis engagement) to the second spindle, but the spindle amplifier or motor encoder fails to confirm execution within the timeout period. This is typically caused by serial communication failure between CNC and spindle amplifier, incorrect spindle parameters, or mechanical/electrical faults preventing gear engagement.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check second spindle amplifier LED display. A-06B/α-series should show green RDY light. Flashing or red ALM indicates communication or power fault. Record any alarm codes displayed on amplifier 7-segment display.

  2. 2

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SPINDLE screen. Check diagnostic #40 (2nd spindle serial communication status). Bit 0 should be 1 for normal communication. If 0, check FSSB cable connections at CNC I/O Link board and spindle amplifier CN1/CN1A connectors.

  3. 3

Verify second spindle amplifier assignment. Check parameter 4076 (spindle amplifier serial number assignment). Second spindle should typically be set to amplifier #2. Cross-reference with parameter 4020#0 (serial spindle selection bit).

  4. 4

Inspect optical fiber cable for damage or contamination if using FSSB optical link. Clean fiber connectors with lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Replace fiber cable if bent radius is less than 30mm or visible damage present.

Never look directly into optical fiber connector while power is on - can cause eye damage

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Amplifier hardware failure confirmed
  • ·PMC ladder logic modification required
  • ·Parameter corruption requiring factory defaults

Prevention

  • Regular amplifier cooling system maintenance
  • Periodic parameter backup
  • Monitor communication cable integrity during routine maintenance

Common Mistakes

  • Forcing PMC signals without understanding consequences
  • Changing amplifier type parameters without proper documentation
  • Ignoring amplifier cooling system maintenance
