Fanuc Alarm 606 - n AXIS: CNV. RADIATOR FAN FAILURE

SYSTEM ALARM 606

Fanuc alarm 606: SYSTEM ALARM 606. This alarm indicates a fault condition detected by the Fanuc control. Refer to the alarm number and name to identify the specific system or function involved.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 606 indicates the cooling fan for the PSM (Power Supply Module) or PSMR (Power Supply Module Regenerative) external heat dissipator has failed or is not operating within acceptable parameters. The amplifier has detected insufficient airflow or no feedback signal from the fan, which can lead to thermal damage if not addressed immediately. This alarm will halt machine operation to protect the power supply components from overheating.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the machine completely and lock out main power supply following proper LOTO procedures. Wait at least 5 minutes for capacitor discharge before opening any amplifier or power supply cabinet doors.

High voltage remains present in PSM/PSMR modules for several minutes after power-off. Risk of electrocution or arc flash injury.

  2. 2

Locate the external radiator fan unit on the PSM/PSMR module (typically mounted on cabinet side or rear panel). Visually inspect fan blades for physical damage, debris accumulation, or blockage. Check if fan rotates freely by hand.

  3. 3

Inspect fan wiring harness connector at both fan motor and PSM/PSMR module. Verify connector CN1 or fan connector is fully seated and pins are not damaged or corroded. Check for broken wires or signs of overheating on insulation.

  4. 4

If fan is defective, replace with Fanuc OEM replacement part (reference PSM/PSMR model and specification plate for correct part number). After replacement, power up and verify alarm clears. Monitor amplifier LED for AL (red) indication, which should extinguish if fan operates correctly.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Internal amplifier power supply fault confirmed
  • ·Multiple related servo alarms present
  • ·Thermal damage visible on amplifier components

Prevention

  • Schedule regular heat sink cleaning every 6 months
  • Monitor electrical cabinet ambient temperature
  • Inspect fan operation during routine maintenance
  • Keep spare cooling fans in inventory

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring alarm assuming fan looks operational
  • Not checking feedback circuit when fan appears to run
  • Using non-Fanuc replacement fans
  • Failing to verify proper airflow direction after fan replacement
