Fanuc Alarm 304 - G28 COMMANDED WITHOUT ZERO RETURN

G28 COMMANDED WITHOUT ZERO RETURN

Fanuc PS304: A G28 reference return command was used but the reference position has not been established. On machines with incremental encoders, the reference position must be set before G28 can be used.

Root Cause Summary

FANUC 304 APC ALARM indicates a parity error in the absolute pulse coder feedback data for the specified axis. This typically results from degraded communication between the absolute encoder and the servo amplifier, caused by cable damage, connector contamination, or encoder failure. The absolute position data cannot be reliably read, preventing proper servo operation.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the machine and inspect the encoder cable (typically separate from power cable on αi series motors) on the affected axis. Check for physical damage, sharp bends, pinch points, or areas where shielding may be compromised near cable carriers or routing points.

Ensure EMERGENCY STOP is active and verify all power indicators are off before accessing cables.

  2. 2

Disconnect encoder connectors at both the motor (round Hirose/circular connector) and amplifier (CN2 on αi amplifiers, JA7 on older Digital AC servos). Inspect pins for corrosion, contamination, or bent contacts. Clean with electronic contact cleaner if needed.

Do not force connectors. Note orientation and pin alignment. Contamination from cutting fluid or coolant is common in machining environments.

  3. 3

Check cable shield continuity and grounding at the amplifier end using a multimeter. Shield should have low resistance to amplifier chassis ground. Re-secure cable clamps ensuring separation from power cables and high-current lines.

  4. 4

After reconnecting, navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO screen and monitor parameter 300-303 (serial pulse coder data) while jogging the axis slowly. Values should increment/decrement smoothly without jumps or freezing, indicating clean communication.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Amplifier module failure confirmed
  • ·Multiple axes affected simultaneously
  • ·Alarm persists after all troubleshooting steps

Prevention

  • Maintain proper encoder cable routing away from power lines
  • Perform regular connection inspections and cleaning
  • Monitor encoder battery status in preventive maintenance
  • Use proper EMI suppression techniques
  • Protect encoders from environmental contamination

Common Mistakes

  • Connecting encoder shield at both ends creating ground loops
  • Using incorrect encoder parameters for hardware type
  • Ignoring EMI sources during installation
  • Mixing encoder and power cables in same conduit
  • Attempting encoder repairs without proper ESD protection
