Fanuc Alarm 308 - APC ALARM: n AXIS BATTERY DOWN 2

SERVO ALARM 308

Absolute pulse coder battery voltage is critically low on the n-th axis (second warning level). Replace backup battery immediately.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 308 indicates the absolute pulse coder (APC) battery voltage on the specified axis has reached a critically low level (second warning stage). This is a final warning before absolute position data loss occurs; the battery must be replaced immediately to prevent loss of absolute position reference and potential machine datum issues.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check DIAGNOSIS screen > SERVO > APC BATTERY (path varies by series: 0i/16i use SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS > #300-399, 30i/31i/32i use DIAGNOSIS > SERVO > APC). Record battery voltage values for the affected axis.

  2. 2

Identify the motor serial number and battery type for the affected axis. Replace the APC battery on the motor encoder with correct Fanuc part (BR-2/3A with connector for alpha/beta servo, A98L-0031-0025 for older models). Battery is typically located on motor rear cover.

Battery replacement must be completed within 15-30 minutes of disconnection to prevent loss of absolute position data. Do NOT power down the servo amplifier during replacement.

  3. 3

After battery replacement, clear alarm 308 using RESET key. Verify alarm does not return and check APC battery voltage on DIAGNOSIS screen shows >3.0V DC (normal range 3.2-3.6V).

  4. 4

If alarm persists after battery replacement, perform APC data reset via parameter PWE=1, then SYSTEM > PMC > SETTING > INITIALIZE APC (path varies by control). Re-establish reference position using return-to-zero procedure for the affected axis.

APC reset will erase absolute position data. Machine must be manually homed after this operation.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Absolute position lost and complex reference return required
  • ·Multiple axes showing simultaneous battery alarms

Prevention

  • Replace APC batteries every 5-7 years proactively
  • Monitor battery voltage monthly in DIAGNOSIS menu
  • Maintain proper environmental conditions around servo motors
  • Keep spare APC batteries in inventory

Common Mistakes

  • Removing battery with servo power on
  • Using incorrect battery part number
  • Ignoring first battery warning (Alarm 307)
  • Not recording absolute positions before battery replacement
