Fanuc Alarm 307 - APC ALARM: n AXIS BATTERY DOWN 1

Battery Alarm

Absolute pulse coder battery voltage is low on the n-th axis (first warning level). Replace backup battery soon to prevent data loss.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 307 indicates the absolute pulse coder (APC) battery voltage on the specified axis has dropped below the first warning threshold. This is a predictive alarm indicating the battery powering the encoder's absolute position memory is weakening and requires replacement soon to prevent loss of absolute position reference data.

Safety

  • Keep power on until battery replaced to avoid memory loss
  • Disconnect power to the CNC machine before working on the battery compartment if possible and safe to do so. Follow lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Be careful when handling batteries. Some batteries may contain corrosive materials. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and eye protection.
  • Ensure correct battery polarity when replacing the battery. Incorrect polarity can damage the CNC control.
  • Dispose of old batteries properly according to local regulations.
  • Some CNC controls may have capacitors that can hold a charge even after power is removed. Discharge these capacitors before working on the battery compartment (consult the CNC manual).
  • If unsure about any step, consult a qualified CNC technician.
  • Keep power on until battery is replaced to avoid memory loss
  • Ensure the machine is in a safe state before performing any checks or replacements

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Verify alarm and axis number. Navigate to ALARM screen to confirm '307 APC ALARM: n AXIS BATTERY DOWN 1' and note which axis (n) is affected. Check alarm history for frequency and duration of occurrence.

  2. 2

Check battery voltage on DIAGNOSIS screen. Navigate to SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS and check diagnostic numbers 300-307 (axis dependent, typically D300+axis number for battery voltage) to confirm actual battery voltage reading is between 3.0-3.2V. Normal voltage should be 3.6V or higher.

  3. 3

Verify amplifier LED status. Check the servo amplifier LED for the affected axis. A steady or flashing BATT LED (if equipped on amplifier model) confirms low battery condition. Refer to amplifier model-specific LED diagnostics (αi series shows battery status on 7-segment display).

  4. 4

Replace APC battery assembly. Power down machine and replace the battery pack on the motor encoder (typically connector-mounted battery holder with A98L-0031-00xx part number). After replacement, perform absolute position reset via PMC ladder or Parameter 1815 (APZ) method, then execute reference position return to re-establish home position. Clear alarm with RESET key.

Battery replacement must occur within 2-4 weeks. Do NOT power off the machine unnecessarily before replacement, as this accelerates position data loss risk. Maintain axis power during battery swap if using hot-swap capable systems.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder cable replacement required
  • ·Servo amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Absolute position data lost

Prevention

  • Replace encoder batteries every 3-5 years preventively
  • Monitor battery voltage monthly via diagnostics
  • Maintain clean, dry environment around encoders
  • Document absolute position data regularly

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring first warning level until complete failure
  • Not recording absolute position before battery replacement
  • Using incorrect battery type
  • Failing to verify position integrity after battery change
