Fanuc Alarm 303 - APC ALARM: n AXIS FRAMING

SYSTEM ALARM 303

Fanuc alarm 303: SYSTEM ALARM 303. This alarm indicates a fault condition detected by the Fanuc control. Refer to the alarm number and name to identify the specific system or function involved.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 303 indicates a serial pulse coder framing error between the CNC and the absolute pulse coder (serial encoder) on the specified axis. This occurs when the control cannot properly decode the serial communication protocol from the encoder, typically due to cable damage, connector contamination, noise interference, or encoder/amplifier hardware failure.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the machine. Inspect the serial pulse coder cable between the amplifier and motor encoder. Check for cuts, pinches, excessive bending near connectors, or cable shield damage. Verify cable routing away from power lines and welding equipment.

Ensure EMERGENCY STOP is active and verify zero voltage at amplifier before touching cables.

  2. 2

Disconnect the encoder cable at both the amplifier (JD1A for αi series) and motor encoder connector. Inspect pins for bending, corrosion, or contamination. Clean connectors with contact cleaner. Check for proper pin engagement and secure locking mechanisms.

  3. 3

Measure cable continuity and insulation resistance. Check encoder cable shield continuity to ground at amplifier side only (shield should be grounded at one end). Resistance between signal pairs should be consistent with cable specification (typically 100-120 ohms differential impedance).

  4. 4

If cable damage is suspected, temporarily swap encoder cable with a known-good axis or install new Fanuc-specified serial pulse coder cable (A860 series encoder requires specific shielded twisted-pair cable). Re-test for alarm after cable replacement.

Use only Fanuc-approved encoder cables. Incorrect cable types cause communication errors.

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Oscilloscope testing required

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection
  • Proper cable routing away from EMI sources
  • Maintain clean, dry electrical connections
  • Use strain reliefs on encoder cables

Common Mistakes

  • Grounding cable shield at both ends
  • Using non-Fanuc encoder cables
  • Ignoring EMI sources during installation
  • Not backing up parameters before component replacement
