Fanuc Alarm 302 - Encoder Checksum Error

APC Checksum Error

Fanuc system alarm 302: APC Checksum Error. A memory error has been detected in the CNC control. This may indicate a hardware failure, battery issue, or data corruption.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 302 indicates the CNC has lost communication with the absolute pulse coder (APC) on the specified axis, typically due to serial communication timeout. The serial encoder interface between the absolute position encoder and the servo amplifier or CNC has failed to transmit position data within the expected time window. This is most commonly caused by damaged encoder cables, loose connections at the motor or amplifier, encoder power supply issues, or failed encoder electronics.

Safety

  • Position data is invalid
  • Re-home required

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the machine. Inspect the pulse coder cable from the motor encoder to the servo amplifier CN2 connector (or CN1 on older amplifiers). Look for cable damage, excessive bending near connectors, contamination, or loose backshells.

Ensure main power is OFF and capacitors are discharged before touching amplifier connections.

  2. 2

Disconnect and reconnect both ends of the pulse coder cable. Verify connector pins are not bent or corroded. Check that connector locking mechanisms are fully engaged and tightened to proper torque specification.

  3. 3

Measure cable continuity using a multimeter. Check all signal lines and shield ground. Replace the pulse coder cable if any intermittent connections or resistance above 1-2 ohms is detected on signal lines.

  4. 4

After cable replacement or reconnection, power up and check DIAGNOSIS > SERIAL on the control. Navigate to the serial pulse coder screen and verify the axis shows encoder position data updating. Also check parameter 1815#0 (absolute encoder setting) is set correctly for your encoder type.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Multiple axes showing same alarm
  • ·Control board replacement needed
  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·No improvement after cable and connection checks

Prevention

  • Maintain proper APC cable routing away from power lines
  • Perform regular connection inspections during PM
  • Keep encoder areas clean and dry
  • Monitor servo amplifier cooling to prevent overheating

Common Mistakes

  • Swapping encoder cables between axes without parameter changes
  • Ignoring EMI sources during troubleshooting
  • Not checking cable shield continuity
  • Assuming encoder failure without testing cables first
