Fanuc Alarm 052 - Spindle Speed Not Set

No Spindle Command

Fanuc spindle alarm 052: No Spindle Command. A fault has been detected in the spindle system. Check the spindle amplifier for fault codes and the Fanuc alarm list for the specific SP alarm sub-code.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 052 occurs when a spindle motion command (M03, M04, or M05) is issued without a preceding S-code (spindle speed) value in the program. This is a programming error where the CNC expects a defined spindle speed before executing spindle rotation commands. The alarm protects against undefined spindle operation and requires proper S-code specification.

Safety

  • Spindle will not start

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the NC program at the alarm block. Check if M03/M04 appears without an S-code on the same line or in preceding blocks (e.g., 'M03' alone instead of 'S1000 M03').

  2. 2

Edit the program to include S-code before or on the same block as the spindle start command (e.g., change 'N100 M03' to 'N100 S1200 M03').

  3. 3

Check parameter 3704#0 (S1D) - if set to 1, S-code is modal and retains previous value. If set to 0, S must be specified each time. Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM > 3704 to verify.

  4. 4

Reset alarm with RESET button and restart program from a safe block with proper S-code specified.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter 3405 modification required and machine builder approval needed
  • ·Persistent alarm after program corrections
  • ·Spindle hardware malfunction suspected

Prevention

  • Always include M03/M04 after tool changes
  • Use program templates with proper modal command sequences
  • Enable single block mode when testing new programs
  • Document spindle speeds and directions in program comments

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming spindle state carries over between programs
  • Omitting spindle commands in subprograms
  • Using block restart without considering modal states
  • Disabling parameter 3405 instead of fixing program structure
