Okuma OSP Alarm A 8588 - Coolant Flow

Coolant Flow

A coolant flow sensor did not turn ON within its monitor time after the corresponding coolant output was commanded, or a flow switch stayed ON longer than allowed when the coolant output was off. The code identifies which coolant line (1-4, 2nd coolant, turret coolant, oil mist, or high pressure coolant) failed the check. At the machine this means coolant is not actually reaching the flow sensor even though the control turned the supply on.

Common Causes

  • Low coolant level in the tank starving the pump
  • Clogged coolant pipe, filter or nozzle restricting flow
  • Flow/supply sensor switch set to the wrong position
  • Faulty flow sensor switch (stuck ON or never actuating)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code None = Coolant flow sensor did not turn ON within the monitor time (supply sensor type machines); code 1 = Coolant 1 flow not detected within the coolant 1 flow alarm monitor time; code 2 = Coolant 2 flow not detected within the coolant 2 flow alarm monitor time; code 3 = Coolant 3 flow not detected within the coolant 3 flow alarm monitor time; code 4 = Coolant 4 flow not detected within the coolant 4 flow alarm monitor time; code 5 = Coolant 1 flow switch stayed ON past the set time while coolant 1 outputs were OFF; code 6 = Coolant 2 flow switch stayed ON past the set time while coolant 2 outputs were OFF; code 7 = Coolant 3 flow switch stayed ON past the set time while coolant 3 outputs were OFF
  2. 2Read the code to identify the affected line: 1-4 = coolant 1-4, 5-7 = flow switch stuck ON with coolant output off, 8/9 = A-turret oil mist, 10/11 = A/B turret coolant, 12 = high pressure coolant, 13-15 = 2nd coolant 1-3.
  3. 3Check the coolant tank level and top up if low; a low level is the most common cause of no-flow alarms.
  4. 4Inspect the coolant pipe, filter and nozzle on the flagged line for clogging or kinks; clean or replace the pipe if restricted.
  5. 5Verify the supply/flow sensor switch is mounted and set at the correct position for the line being monitored.
  6. 6For codes 5-7 (flow switch ON while the coolant output is OFF), suspect a stuck flow switch; actuate it by hand and replace it if it does not release.
  7. 7If flow is confirmed present but the sensor never turns ON, replace the supply sensor switch with a new one.
