Okuma OSP Alarm A 8584 - Tailstock high/low change interlock

Tailstock high/low change interlock

A tailstock high/low thrust change command (M98/M99) was designated while a spindle, M-tool spindle or C-axis was still rotating, while NC tailstock teaching mode was ON, or on a machine without the NC tailstock high/low thrust specification. The interlock prevents changing tailstock thrust under unsafe conditions.

Common Causes

  • M98/M99 commanded while the spindle is still rotating
  • M98/M99 commanded while the M-tool spindle is still rotating
  • M98/M99 commanded while the C-axis is still rotating
  • M98/M99 commanded with NC tailstock teaching mode ON
  • Command issued on a machine without the NC tailstock high/low thrust specification

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = M98/M99 designated while the spindle is not stopped.; code 2 = M98/M99 designated while the M-tool spindle is not stopped.; code 3 = M98/M99 designated while the C-axis is not stopped.; code 4 = M98/M99 designated while NC tailstock teaching mode is ON.; code 5 = M98/M99 designated on a machine without the NC tailstock high/low thrust specification.
  2. 2Read the code: 1 spindle not stopped; 2 M-tool spindle not stopped; 3 C-axis not stopped; 4 NC tailstock teaching mode ON; 5 machine has no NC tailstock high/low thrust specification.
  3. 3For codes 1-3, stop the relevant spindle or C-axis (M05 or equivalent) and confirm zero speed before issuing M98/M99.
  4. 4For code 4, exit NC tailstock teaching mode before commanding the high/low thrust change.
  5. 5For code 5, remove M98/M99 from the program because this machine has no NC tailstock high/low thrust specification; use the manual thrust change procedure instead.
  6. 6Re-run the tailstock thrust change sequence in single block and confirm each precondition is met before M98/M99 executes.
