Okuma OSP Alarm A 1751 - Tow-along tailstock ON/OFF interlock

Tow-along tailstock ON/OFF interlock

A tailstock connect/disconnect command (M188/M189, G152/G153, or the tailstock connect ON key) was issued while the required machine conditions were not met, such as the spindle still rotating, center work not selected, or the tailstock spindle or turrets not at their required positions. The control blocked the command to prevent connecting or disconnecting the tow-along tailstock in an unsafe state.

Common Causes

  • M188/M189/G152/G153 commanded while the spindle is still rotating or a rotation command is active
  • Center work mode not selected before the tailstock connect/disconnect command
  • Tailstock spindle not at the retract end, or turrets not at the positive stroke end
  • Both tailstock connect and disconnect confirmation signals ON or OFF at the same time (signal/switch fault)
  • Tailstock chuck or spindle chuck clamp state not matching the commanded operation

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = M188/M189/G153 commanded while the spindle is not at zero speed.; code 2 = M188/M189/G153 commanded while the spindle is not fully at a standstill.; code 3 = M188/M189/G152 commanded while a spindle rotation command is active.; code 4 = M188/M189/G152 commanded while center work is not selected.; code 5 = M188/M189/G152 commanded while the tailstock spindle is not at the retraction end.; code 6 = M188/M189/G152 commanded while the turrets are not at the positive stroke end.; code 7 = M189/M152 commanded while both connect and disconnect signals are ON or both OFF.; code 8 = Tailstock connect ON key pressed while the spindle is not at a standstill.
  2. 2Read the alarm code on screen first; it tells you exactly which condition failed, then correct that condition before re-issuing the command.
  3. 3Code 1/2/3/8: stop the spindle completely (zero speed, no active rotation command) before commanding M188/M189/G152/G153 or pressing the tailstock connect ON key.
  4. 4Code 4: select center work mode before issuing the tailstock connect/disconnect command.
  5. 5Code 5/10: retract the tailstock spindle fully to its retraction end; Code 6/9: move the turrets (XA-axis) to the positive stroke end before connecting.
  6. 6Code 7: check the tailstock connect and disconnect confirmation switches and wiring — both signals ON or both OFF indicates a faulty switch or harness, not an operation error.
  7. 7Code 11/12/13/14/21/22/23: verify the tailstock chuck (and spindle chuck) clamp/unclamp state matches the command; unclamp as required and check the clamp confirmation signals if the states disagree.
  8. 8If the alarm persists after the operating conditions are corrected, record the alarm number and code and contact Okuma service.
