HEIDENHAIN 126-012E - Too many UM units connected to one CC: CC index

Too many UM units connected to one CC: CC index

The stated CC controller unit has too many UM inverters attached. Each CC supports only as many inverters as it has axis channels available.

Root Cause Summary

Heidenhain drive architecture limits the number of UM inverter units per CC communication controller to prevent bus overload and timing conflicts. This alarm triggers when the control detects more than the permissible UM units (typically 8) mapped to a single CC index, either through physical configuration errors or communication addressing conflicts.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Identify affected CC index

Note the CC index number shown in the %1 parameter of the alarm message. This identifies which communication controller has too many UM units assigned.

The CC index corresponds to the physical CC slot position or logical CC numbering in your machine configuration.

  2. 2

    Count physical UM connections

Trace the DRIVE communication cable from the identified CC module and count all UM units in the daisy-chain topology connected to that specific CC controller.

Power down the machine before tracing cables in the electrical cabinet to prevent shock hazard.

  3. 3

    Redistribute UM units

If more than 8 UM units are found on one CC, physically reconnect UM units to distribute them across multiple CC controllers. Maintain proper cable termination at the end of each DRIVE bus segment.

Balance axes logically - put related axes (e.g., gantry pairs) on the same CC when possible for synchronized communication.

  4. 4

    Update drive configuration

Access MOD > SYSTEM CONFIGURATION > CfgDriveController and modify the CC assignment for each relocated UM unit to match the new physical topology. Save configuration and reboot.

Use SEL to select each axis and verify its AxisCCIndex parameter matches the physical CC connection.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·CC hardware upgrade required
  • ·Persistent addressing conflicts after multiple attempts
  • ·Uncertainty about axis configuration requirements

Prevention

  • Always verify CC axis capacity before adding UM units
  • Maintain documentation of UM addressing scheme
  • Backup parameters before hardware modifications
  • Plan axis expansion with proper CC sizing

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming all CC models have same axis capacity
  • Forgetting to update MP7500 after hardware changes
  • Not checking for addressing conflicts during expansion
  • Connecting UM units without consulting system documentation
