Haas 124 - LOW BATTERY | Haas CNC Alarm

LOW BATTERY

The MOCON board has detected that the internal battery voltage used to maintain parameter memory, program storage, and real-time clock has dropped below the acceptable threshold voltage. This alarm warns that the battery requires replacement soon to prevent loss of all machine parameters, offsets, and stored programs when main power is removed. The machine will continue to operate normally but data loss is imminent upon power interruption.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 124 occurs when the Z-axis is not at the required tool change position defined in Parameter 64 during an M06 command. The NGC control requires exact positioning at this height as a safety interlock before allowing carousel rotation to prevent spindle/tool collisions with workpiece or fixtures.

Safety

  • Ensure spindle is clear before Z motion
  • Be aware of potential pinch points during Z-axis movement, especially near the tool changer.
  • Power down the machine before inspecting or replacing any electrical components (servo motor, encoder, cables). Lockout/Tagout procedures should be followed.
  • If manually jogging the Z axis, use caution and slow speeds to avoid collisions.
  • Ensure the workholding device is secure before initiating any axis movement.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Access Parameter 64

Press SETTING, then PARAMETERS, scroll to Parameter 64 (Tool Change Z Position) and note the current value.

Write down the original value before making changes for easy restoration if needed.

  2. 2

    Verify Actual Tool Change Height

Manually jog Z-axis to safe tool change position (typically Z0.0 or machine home), note the MACHINE POSITION display value.

Ensure spindle is clear of workpiece and fixtures before jogging Z-axis.

  3. 3

    Update Parameter 64

Enter the correct machine position value into Parameter 64, press WRITE/ENTER, then cycle power to ensure parameter takes effect.

Some older NGC controls require EMERGENCY STOP reset after parameter changes.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo drive faults persist after basic checks
  • ·Mechanical binding or ballscrew issues detected
  • ·Parameter changes don't resolve positioning errors

Prevention

  • Regularly verify Parameter 64 matches actual tool change height
  • Always use G53 machine coordinates for tool change positioning
  • Include G49 before M06 to cancel tool length compensation
  • Avoid interrupting Z-axis motion during tool change sequences

Common Mistakes

  • Modifying Parameter 64 without measuring actual machine position
  • Using work coordinates instead of machine coordinates for tool change height
  • Forgetting to cycle power after parameter changes
  • Not accounting for active tool length compensation in positioning calculations
