Haas Alarm 1241 - Chip Auger Jam

Chip Auger Jam

This alarm is triggered when the chip auger motor draws excessive current indicating a mechanical jam or when the auger motor overload relay trips. The MOCON board monitors the auger motor circuit and will fault if current exceeds limits or if feedback from the overload is lost. Automatic operation will halt to prevent damage to the auger drive system.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1241 fires when the chip auger motor current exceeds the programmed limit in Parameter 396 (AUGER CURRENT LIMIT) or when the auger jam sensor detects mechanical obstruction. The NGC control monitors auger motor load through relay R27 and will fault immediately to prevent motor burnout and protect the conveyor drive system.

Safety

  • LOTO required - chip auger has exposed rotating flights that can cause severe crushing injuries. Machine must be fully de-energized before reaching into auger trough.
  • Auger motor may attempt to auto-restart when alarm is cleared on some configurations. Verify M77 (auger off) state before accessing conveyor area.
  • Compacted chips may spring loose when obstruction is cleared - wear face shield and heavy gloves when breaking up chip jams in auger housing.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Power down and lockout machine

Turn main disconnect OFF and follow lockout/tagout procedures before accessing chip conveyor area.

Never attempt to clear jams with power on - rotating auger can cause severe injury

  2. 2

    Remove chip pan access covers

Remove the chip pan covers and visually inspect the auger for wrapped chips, long stringy material, or foreign objects blocking rotation.

Use a flashlight to check the entire auger length - jams often occur at the discharge end

  3. 3

    Manually clear obstruction

Use chip hooks or pliers to remove wrapped material. Manually rotate auger by hand to verify free movement throughout full rotation.

If auger won't turn by hand, check for bent flights or damaged auger shaft

  4. 4

    Test auger operation

Power up machine and test auger using M78 (Chip Auger Forward) command in MDI mode to verify smooth operation before resuming production.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Motor replacement required
  • ·Auger shaft replacement needed
  • ·Electrical troubleshooting beyond basic checks
  • ·Repeated alarms after clearing obvious causes

Prevention

  • Monitor chip load and clear regularly
  • Use proper cutting parameters to avoid long stringy chips
  • Maintain adequate coolant flow to help chip evacuation
  • Inspect auger monthly for wear and damage
  • Keep jam sensor clean and properly adjusted

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting to clear jams with power on
  • Ignoring worn auger flights until complete failure
  • Setting Parameter 396 too high to avoid alarms
  • Not checking sensor gap after maintenance
  • Using incorrect motor replacement parts
