Haas Alarm 1251 - SMTC Double Arm

SMTC Double Arm

This alarm occurs on machines equipped with a Simultaneous Multi-Tool Changer (SMTC) system when the control detects both robot arms are attempting to move or occupy the same space at the same time, creating a collision risk. The MOCON board monitors position feedback from both arm assemblies and triggers this fault when the logic detects unsafe simultaneous motion or position conflict. Machine motion halts immediately to prevent damage to the SMTC mechanism.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1251 SMTC Double Arm occurs when the Side Mount Tool Changer's dual-arm mechanism fails to complete proper sequencing during tool changes. The NGC control detects position feedback errors from the arm proximity switches or timing violations in the tool change macro sequence.

Safety

  • Carousel and arms may move unexpectedly during diagnostics - keep hands clear of ATC mechanism and do not reach into tool pockets while machine power is on
  • Lock out spindle by selecting Manual mode and keeping hand on EMERGENCY STOP before manually rotating carousel or inspecting arm clearances
  • Compressed air stored in ATC cylinders can cause sudden arm movement even after air supply is shut off - bleed air lines before disconnecting pneumatic components

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Arm Position Indicators

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > ATC and observe arm position status lights. Both arms should show HOME when not in tool change cycle.

Use MDI mode and execute M19 (spindle orient) followed by M6 T0 to manually cycle arms and observe position feedback.

  2. 2

    Test Proximity Switches

Access DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS and monitor arm home switch inputs while manually moving arms (power off, E-stop active). Switches should toggle cleanly.

Ensure E-stop is active and spindle is locked before manual manipulation.

  3. 3

    Inspect Sensor Mounting

Check proximity switch mounting brackets for looseness, proper gap (typically 1-2mm), and cable integrity. Clean metal sensing targets of debris.

Use a feeler gauge to verify consistent sensor gap across the entire sensing target travel.

  4. 4

    Verify Wiring Continuity

Test continuity from proximity switches to the main control board connector, typically through the ATC junction box. Check for intermittent connections.

Power down machine and lock out electrical before continuity testing.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Proximity switch replacement required
  • ·Encoder replacement needed
  • ·Major mechanical component wear
  • ·Pneumatic system overhaul required

Prevention

  • Perform weekly ATC lubrication per maintenance schedule
  • Keep carousel and arm areas clean of chips and debris
  • Monitor air pressure daily
  • Execute monthly tool change cycle count verification

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring proximity switch gap specifications
  • Using incorrect lubricants on pneumatic components
  • Bypassing safety interlocks during troubleshooting
  • Forcing manual arm movement with power applied
