TOOL NOT CLAMPED

ATC Door

This alarm indicates the automatic tool changer enclosure door is not fully closed and latched as verified by the door limit switch input to IOCON. The machine control will not allow ATC operations or spindle start until the door is secured to prevent operator injury or collision damage. The door interlock is a safety feature required during carousel rotation and tool change sequences.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 131 fires when the tool clamp proximity switch (Parameter 78) does not confirm proper drawbar retraction within the timeout period. The NGC control expects the clamp switch to activate after a tool change, indicating the tool holder taper is fully seated and secured in the spindle.

Safety

  • Close door for operation
  • ⚠️ REQUIRED: Close door before operating machine
  • Ensure the machine is in emergency stop before performing any maintenance or troubleshooting.
  • Disconnect power to the machine before working on electrical components.
  • Be aware of potential pinch points when working around the ATC door mechanism.
  • If the door is pneumatically or hydraulically operated, relieve pressure before working on the system.
  • Never bypass safety interlocks during normal operation. Bypassing interlocks is for diagnostic purposes only and should be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and gloves.
  • Close door before operation.
  • Always ensure the machine is locked out to prevent accidental startup.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Switch Status in Diagnostics

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS and observe the tool clamp switch state during manual tool change operation.

The switch should change state when drawbar retracts - if it doesn't move, the switch is likely failed.

  2. 2

    Verify Switch Position

With spindle stopped, manually check proximity switch mounting and gap to target. Typical gap should be 0.030-0.050 inches.

Ensure spindle is completely stopped and locked out before accessing switch area.

  3. 3

    Test Switch Continuity

Disconnect switch connector and test with multimeter. Replace switch if open circuit or intermittent.

Haas proximity switches are typically 3-wire DC type - check for proper 24VDC supply voltage first.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drawbar spring replacement required
  • ·Spindle bearing noise detected
  • ·Electrical wiring issues found

Prevention

  • Regular spindle taper cleaning
  • Proper tool holder maintenance
  • Scheduled drawbar lubrication

Common Mistakes

  • Using damaged tool holders
  • Over-lubricating drawbar mechanism
  • Ignoring proximity switch alignment
