Haas Alarm 1320 - Coolant Tank Level

Coolant Tank Level

This alarm indicates the coolant tank level is too low and the coolant system has been disabled to prevent pump damage. The MOCON board monitors a float switch or level sensor in the coolant tank and triggers this alarm when the signal indicates insufficient fluid. The machine will continue to run but coolant flow is stopped until the tank is refilled and the alarm is cleared.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1320 fires when the coolant tank level sensor detects insufficient coolant volume in the reservoir tank. The NGC control monitors this sensor to prevent coolant pump damage from running dry and to ensure adequate coolant flow for spindle cooling and chip evacuation.

Safety

  • Ensure coolant pump is off before reaching into tank to inspect or clean float switch - rotating pump impellers can cause injury
  • Avoid skin contact with used coolant - contains metal particles, biological contaminants, and may cause dermatitis. Use nitrile gloves when handling switches or inspecting tank
  • Do not bypass or defeat coolant level switch to run machine dry - severe spindle bearing damage and fire risk from overheated workpiece can result

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Physical Coolant Level

Visually inspect the coolant tank reservoir. Normal level should be between MIN and MAX marks on tank sight gauge.

Ensure machine is powered off before opening any coolant system panels

  2. 2

    Add Coolant Mixture

Add proper coolant mixture (typically 5-10% concentration) to bring level above minimum mark. Use only Haas-approved coolant or equivalent water-soluble cutting fluid.

Always mix coolant in separate container first, never add concentrate directly to tank

  3. 3

    Reset Alarm and Test

Press RESET to clear alarm 1320. Verify coolant pump operation and flow at spindle before resuming machining operations.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·NGC input module replacement required
  • ·Internal spindle coolant seal replacement
  • ·Persistent alarm after all troubleshooting steps completed

Prevention

  • Check coolant level weekly during daily maintenance
  • Maintain proper coolant concentration to prevent sensor contamination
  • Replace coolant every 6-12 months depending on usage
  • Keep coolant tank and surrounding area clean

Common Mistakes

  • Adding straight water instead of proper coolant mixture
  • Ignoring small coolant leaks that worsen over time
  • Not cleaning level sensor during regular maintenance
  • Overfilling tank which can cause false readings
