Haas Alarm 1321 - Coolant Pump Thermal

Coolant Pump Thermal

This alarm indicates the coolant pump motor has exceeded its thermal limit and the thermal overload relay has tripped to protect the motor from damage. The MOCON board receives a signal from the overload relay that the pump motor is overheating and immediately shuts down coolant flow. The machine can continue running in dry mode but coolant cannot be activated until the motor cools and the alarm is cleared.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1321 occurs when the coolant pump motor thermal overload relay trips due to excessive current draw or overheating. This protective relay monitors motor amperage and temperature, opening the contactor when preset limits are exceeded to prevent motor damage.

Safety

  • Always disconnect main power and lock out before reaching into coolant tank or accessing pump components. Coolant pumps can start unexpectedly if M-codes execute during program restart or macro activation.
  • Allow minimum 15 minutes cool-down time before resetting thermal overload relay to prevent immediate re-trip and potential motor damage from repeated thermal stress.
  • When performing insulation resistance (megger) testing, ensure all motor leads are disconnected from contactor and control circuitry to avoid damage to solid-state components from high test voltage.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check overload relay status

Open electrical cabinet and locate the coolant pump motor starter. Check if the thermal overload relay reset button has popped out or shows a tripped indication.

Ensure machine is powered down and locked out before opening electrical cabinet.

  2. 2

    Allow cooling time

Wait 10-15 minutes for the thermal overload relay to cool down before attempting reset. The relay must return to ambient temperature to reset properly.

Feel the motor housing - if it's hot to touch, allow additional cooling time.

  3. 3

    Reset overload relay

Press the reset button on the thermal overload relay firmly until it clicks. Power up machine and test coolant pump operation from COOLNT button on control panel.

  4. 4

    Monitor motor current

Use clamp meter to measure motor current during operation. Compare readings to motor nameplate amperage - should not exceed 110% of rated current.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Motor replacement required
  • ·Electrical supply issues beyond facility control
  • ·Repeated failures after multiple repairs

Prevention

  • Maintain proper coolant levels and cleanliness
  • Replace coolant filters regularly
  • Monitor motor current during PM inspections
  • Keep electrical connections clean and tight

Common Mistakes

  • Resetting overload relay without finding root cause
  • Setting thermal overload too high to prevent tripping
  • Ignoring bearing noise until complete failure
  • Not allowing adequate cooling time before reset
