Haas Alarm 1340 - Pallet Clamp Error

Pallet Clamp Error

This alarm occurs on machines equipped with pallet changers when the pallet clamp mechanism fails to properly secure or release a pallet on the table. The MOCON board receives feedback from pallet clamp proximity sensors that monitor both clamped and unclamped positions. The machine will not allow pallet transfer or any machining operations until proper clamp status is verified.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1340 occurs when the Haas pallet changer control does not receive proper confirmation signals from the pallet clamp proximity switches within the timeout period specified in parameter 800. The NGC control monitors discrete inputs to verify the pallet is fully seated and locked before allowing machine operation to continue.

Safety

  • Pallet not secure
  • WARNING: Unsecured pallet may shift during operation
  • Ensure the machine is in a safe state before performing any maintenance or troubleshooting.
  • Lockout/Tagout procedures must be followed to prevent accidental machine start-up.
  • Be aware of potential pinch points and moving parts during clamp operation.
  • Hydraulic fluid can be under high pressure. Relieve pressure before disconnecting any hydraulic lines.
  • Electrical components can pose a shock hazard. Disconnect power before working on electrical circuits.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves.
  • Never bypass or disable safety interlocks.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Proximity Switch Status

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS and monitor the pallet clamp proximity switch inputs while manually cycling the clamp mechanism.

Look for inputs labeled PALLET CLAMP or similar - they should change state consistently with clamp movement

  2. 2

    Inspect Switch Mounting

Visually inspect the proximity switches on the pallet receiver for proper mounting distance (typically 1-2mm gap) and check for debris or coolant contamination.

Ensure machine is in E-STOP before accessing pallet changer area

  3. 3

    Test Switch Continuity

Using a multimeter, test the proximity switch wiring continuity from the switch connector back to the control cabinet while referencing the electrical prints.

Check both power supply voltage (typically 24VDC) and signal return path

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·PLC module replacement required
  • ·Hydraulic system pressure adjustment needed
  • ·Electrical cabinet modifications required

Prevention

  • Regular proximity switch cleaning and inspection
  • Monitor hydraulic/pneumatic system pressure weekly
  • Keep pallet receiver area free of debris and coolant buildup

Common Mistakes

  • Setting timeout parameter too high masking real problems
  • Not checking both clamped and unclamped proximity switches
  • Ignoring intermittent hydraulic pressure drops
