Haas Alarm 1312 - Axis Regen Overload

Axis Regen Overload

This alarm indicates that the regenerative power being returned to the DC bus from decelerating servo motors has exceeded the safe absorption capacity of the power supply unit. The PSUP cannot dissipate the regenerative energy fast enough, causing DC bus voltage to rise above the safe threshold. The control shuts down motion to prevent damage to the power supply and servo amplifiers from overvoltage conditions.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1312 occurs when the servo drive's regenerative braking circuit exceeds its thermal capacity during rapid deceleration or frequent start/stop cycles. The drive's internal thermal model calculates that the regen resistor has absorbed more energy than its rated capacity, triggering a protective shutdown to prevent hardware damage.

Safety

  • Drive protection active
  • High Voltage: The regen resistor and drive components operate at high voltage. Disconnect power before performing any maintenance or inspection.
  • Hot Surface: The regen resistor can become extremely hot during operation. Allow it to cool down before handling.
  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Ensure proper grounding of the machine and all electrical components to prevent electrical shock.
  • Mechanical Hazard: Ensure the machine is in a safe state before performing any maintenance. Disable axis motion and lock out power.
  • Capacitor Discharge: Be aware that capacitors within the drive can hold a charge even after power is disconnected. Follow proper discharge procedures before working on the drive.
  • Drive protection is active; Do not perform checks or adjustments while the system is powered on
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling electrical components

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Acceleration/Deceleration Parameters

Navigate to SETTING 71 (X-axis accel), SETTING 72 (Y-axis accel), SETTING 73 (Z-axis accel) and verify values are not set too aggressively for the machine's regen capacity.

Typical values should be 150-300 in/min² for most Haas mills, lower for heavier axes

  2. 2

    Review Program G00 Rapid Moves

Examine CNC program for excessive rapid positioning moves (G00) over long distances, particularly Z-axis retracts that cause heavy spindle head deceleration.

Pay special attention to tool change sequences and rapid Z movements

  3. 3

    Adjust Deceleration Rates

Reduce acceleration parameters by 20-30% in SETTINGS 71-73 and test with typical programs to verify alarm clears.

Monitor cycle times to balance productivity with regen capacity

  4. 4

    Implement Smoother Motion Profile

Enable SETTING 19 (Smooth Rapid) if available on your control version to reduce sharp deceleration spikes.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo drive parameter corruption
  • ·Regen resistor replacement required
  • ·Mechanical binding issues persist

Prevention

  • Regularly clean regen resistor and electrical cabinet ventilation
  • Optimize programs to minimize excessive rapid moves and abrupt direction changes
  • Monitor electrical cabinet temperature and improve cooling if needed
  • Perform regular way lubrication maintenance

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring alarm and continuing to run without addressing root cause
  • Setting acceleration parameters too aggressively for regen capacity
  • Failing to verify regen resistor specifications match drive parameters
  • Not considering cumulative thermal effects of high duty cycle operation
