Haas Alarm 1011 - Tailstock Error

Tailstock

This alarm is generated on Haas lathes equipped with a programmable hydraulic tailstock when the control detects the tailstock is not responding to commands or is not in the expected position. The tailstock system uses hydraulic pressure for quill extension and retraction, with position confirmed by proximity switches and pressure transducers. Machine operation requiring tailstock support will be halted until this fault condition is cleared.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1011 occurs when the tailstock fails to reach its commanded position or achieve proper clamping pressure within the programmed time limit. The NGC control monitors tailstock position through proximity switches and hydraulic/pneumatic pressure confirmation circuits, triggering this fault when feedback signals are missing or incorrect.

Safety

  • Part support affected

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Proximity Switch Status

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS and verify tailstock proximity switch states (typically labeled as TAILSTOCK IN, TAILSTOCK OUT, or similar M-codes).

The switch states should change when manually moving the tailstock if pneumatic pressure is available.

  2. 2

    Inspect Switch Mounting

Visually inspect proximity switches for proper mounting distance (typically 1-2mm gap), damage, or contamination with coolant/chips.

Ensure machine is in E-STOP before inspecting switches near moving components.

  3. 3

    Test Switch Continuity

Using a multimeter, test proximity switch wiring continuity from the switch connector back to the control cabinet I/O board.

Check Parameter 27 (INPUT CONFIGURATION) to verify correct input assignments for tailstock switches.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Proximity switches require replacement
  • ·Hydraulic system component failure
  • ·Mechanical binding cannot be resolved with cleaning/lubrication

Prevention

  • Regular cleaning of tailstock ways and proximity switches
  • Monitor hydraulic/pneumatic pressure levels during PM
  • Include tailstock operation in daily machine warm-up routine

Common Mistakes

  • Setting tailstock timer too short for system response time
  • Ignoring gradual pressure loss that eventually causes timeouts
  • Not checking proximity switch gap after maintenance work
