Haas Alarm 1013 - Tool Broken

Tool Breakage

This alarm is generated when the optional Tool Breakage Detection system identifies that a tool has broken during machining or the measured load exceeds programmed thresholds. The system monitors spindle load or uses probe-based verification, and when a break is detected, the MOCON immediately halts program execution. This feature requires proper setup of load monitoring parameters or a tool setter probe with breakage detection macros enabled.

Safety

  • Broken tool hazard

Common Causes

  • Spindle load during cutting exceeded the breakage detection threshold set in tool offset page or Setting parameters
  • Tool breakage detection probe cycle detected missing tool length or diameter outside tolerance window after machining operation
  • Incorrect breakage detection sensitivity settings causing false triggers from normal cutting loads or vibration
  • Actual tool breakage occurred due to excessive feedrate, incorrect speeds, worn tool, or hard material inclusion
  • Wiring or signal issues between tool setter probe and IOCON causing erroneous breakage detection signal

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Step 1: Inspect tool in spindle visually for actual breakage - remove and measure if necessary to confirm physical condition
  2. 2Step 2: Access OFFSET page and review tool breakage detection parameters for the affected tool number, verify thresholds are realistic
  3. 3Step 3: If using load-based detection, review spindle load monitor values in Diagnostics page during test cut to establish proper threshold
  4. 4Step 4: If using probe-based detection, manually run tool setter cycle and verify probe triggers correctly and tool dimensions read accurately
  5. 5Step 5: Check Setting 78 and related tool breakage settings to ensure detection mode and sensitivity match machine configuration and tooling
  6. 6Step 6: Review machine history for pattern of false alarms - adjust detection parameters upward or disable feature if not required for production
