Haas Alarm 1031 - Probe Communication Lost

Probe Signal Lost

This alarm occurs when the control loses the signal from the tool probe during a probing cycle. The MOCON board monitors the probe input and triggers this alarm when the expected continuity or signal state is interrupted unexpectedly during active probing. The machine will stop all motion immediately to prevent potential crash or incorrect tool offset data from being recorded.

Root Cause Summary

Haas alarm 1031 Probe Signal Lost occurs when the NGC control loses communication with the touch probe system during a probing cycle. This typically indicates a broken probe stylus, loose wiring connection, or probe system malfunction that interrupts the electrical circuit between the probe and the machine control.

Safety

  • Probe may crash
  • Ensure the machine is in a safe state before performing any maintenance or repairs. Disable automatic operation and engage the emergency stop.
  • Disconnect power to the CNC control and probe receiver before performing any electrical troubleshooting or repairs.
  • Be aware of potential pinch points and moving parts when working around the machine tool.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and gloves, when working on the machine.
  • Probe system may experience failure or crash, potentially leading to equipment malfunction; ensure safe isolation before testing

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Visual inspection of probe stylus

Remove the probe from the spindle and carefully inspect the stylus for cracks, breaks, or missing components. Check the stylus ball for damage or detachment.

Handle probe carefully - stylus components are precision parts and easily damaged

  2. 2

    Test probe continuity

Using a multimeter, test continuity between the probe body and stylus tip. Should read near zero ohms when stylus is deflected and open circuit when at rest.

A good probe will show infinite resistance at rest and zero resistance when any part of the stylus is touched

  3. 3

    Replace stylus assembly

If stylus is damaged, replace with manufacturer-approved replacement. Ensure proper torque specifications and thread locker application per probe manual.

Keep spare stylus assemblies in stock - they are consumable items in production environments

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·NGC control probe input hardware failure
  • ·Persistent signal issues after component replacement
  • ·Probe system requires factory calibration

Prevention

  • Monitor probe battery status regularly
  • Keep probe components clean and free of contamination
  • Maintain spare stylus assemblies in inventory
  • Perform regular probe qualification cycles

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring probe battery status indicators
  • Using incorrect replacement stylus components
  • Failing to clean probe receiver antenna
  • Not checking probe parameter settings after control updates
