Haas Alarm 11 - Spindle Motor Overload

Spindle Overload

This alarm indicates the spindle drive has detected excessive current draw beyond programmed limits during operation or acceleration. The spindle drive monitors motor current and compares it against parameters set for the specific spindle motor rating, triggering this fault when sustained or peak current exceeds safe thresholds. The spindle immediately stops and will not restart until the cause is identified and the alarm is cleared.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 11 occurs when spindle motor current exceeds the overcurrent threshold in Parameter 71 (SPINDLE OVERLOAD CURRENT), typically set at 110-120% of rated motor current. The NGC control continuously monitors spindle load through the vector drive feedback and triggers this protection alarm when sustained overcurrent conditions threaten motor or drive damage.

Safety

  • Spindle may be hot

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check current cutting parameters

Review active G-code for excessive feed rates (F word) and spindle speeds (S word). Compare against tooling manufacturer recommendations and material specifications.

Use CURRENT COMMANDS display to see real-time feed and spindle load percentages

  2. 2

    Inspect cutting tool condition

Remove tool and examine cutting edges for wear, chipping, or buildup. Check tool runout with dial indicator - should be less than 0.0002" TIR for precision work.

Always use proper tool removal procedures and lock out spindle before handling tools

  3. 3

    Reduce cutting parameters

Decrease feed rate by 25-50% and reduce spindle speed if necessary. Use Parameter 83 (MAX SPINDLE SPEED) to limit if needed for testing.

Monitor spindle load percentage in real-time - should stay below 80% during normal cutting

  4. 4

    Test with air cut

Run same program with Z-axis raised above workpiece to verify spindle operates normally without cutting load.

If alarm still occurs during air cut, mechanical spindle problems are likely

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Spindle bearing replacement needed
  • ·Vector drive replacement required
  • ·Motor winding damage confirmed
  • ·Encoder replacement necessary

Prevention

  • Monitor spindle load percentage during cutting operations
  • Maintain proper cutting tool sharpness
  • Follow recommended feeds and speeds
  • Perform regular spindle bearing lubrication
  • Keep Parameter 71 within 110-120% of motor nameplate current

Common Mistakes

  • Setting Parameter 71 too high to avoid alarms
  • Ignoring gradual increase in spindle load over time
  • Continuing to run with dull tools
  • Not correlating alarm occurrence with specific program operations
  • Assuming alarm is always electrical rather than mechanical
