Haas 110 - Z SERVO OVERLOAD | Haas CNC Alarm

Z SERVO OVERLOAD

The Z-axis servo amplifier has detected excessive current draw or torque demand exceeding safe limits. This alarm is generated by the MOCON board monitoring the Z servo amp and indicates the motor is working harder than normal to maintain position or execute commanded moves. The machine will stop all motion immediately to protect the servo motor and amplifier from thermal damage.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 110 Z Servo Overload occurs when the Z-axis servo drive exceeds the programmed current threshold (typically set in parameter 71) for longer than the allowed time period. The NGC control uses I²T calculations to monitor sustained overload conditions that can damage the servo motor or drive.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check counterbalance pressure

Access DIAGNOSTICS > PNEUMATICS and verify counterbalance pressure reads 80-90 PSI. Low pressure indicates cylinder or valve failure.

Ensure spindle is retracted and Z-axis is supported before checking counterbalance system

  2. 2

    Test counterbalance operation

In MDI mode, jog Z-axis up and down slowly (F10). Movement should be smooth without jerking or binding that indicates counterbalance issues.

Listen for air leaks around counterbalance cylinders during movement

  3. 3

    Verify counterbalance adjustment

With spindle at mid-travel, the Z-axis should hold position when servo is disabled via DIAGNOSTICS > SERVOS. Drift indicates improper counterbalance.

Only disable servos with spindle properly supported

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo motor or drive replacement needed
  • ·Counterbalance system repair required
  • ·Servo parameter tuning needed

Prevention

  • Maintain proper counterbalance pressure
  • Keep Z-axis ways clean and lubricated
  • Use appropriate cutting parameters
  • Regular inspection of servo motor connections

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring counterbalance system maintenance
  • Operating with low lubrication
  • Setting Z-axis feed rates too high
  • Modifying servo parameters without documentation
