Haas Alarm 502 - Spindle Speed Exceeded

Spindle Overspeed

This alarm triggers when the spindle encoder feedback indicates the actual spindle speed has exceeded the maximum allowable RPM limit set in the machine parameters. The MOCON board monitors encoder pulses and compares actual speed to commanded speed and parameter limits. The spindle drive immediately disables and the spindle coasts to a stop to prevent motor or tooling damage.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 502 occurs when the NGC control detects a commanded spindle speed that exceeds the maximum allowable RPM defined in Parameter 226 (Max Spindle Speed) or gear range parameters. The control performs this check before executing the M03/M04 command, preventing potential damage to spindle bearings and drive components.

Safety

  • Spindle overspeed risk

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check current program S-code

Press CURRENT COMMANDS and note the S-value in the active block. Compare this to the spindle speed limit.

The alarm typically occurs at the exact line containing the excessive S-code

  2. 2

    Verify Parameter 226 setting

Navigate to SETTING > PARAMETERS > find Parameter 226 (Max Spindle Speed). Confirm this matches your machine's actual capability.

Never increase Parameter 226 beyond machine specifications without consulting Haas technical support

  3. 3

    Modify program or parameter

Either reduce the S-code in the program to stay within Parameter 226 limits, or verify Parameter 226 is set correctly for your machine model.

Use G97 S[value] to command constant RPM, ensuring the value is within machine limits

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter corruption suspected
  • ·Gear range mechanism malfunction
  • ·Spindle encoder feedback issues

Prevention

  • Always verify S-codes against machine specifications before running programs
  • Use G50 speed limiting with CSS (G96) operations
  • Properly configure tool data maximum speeds
  • Regular parameter backup to prevent configuration loss

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting G50 speed limit with G96 CSS mode
  • Incorrect gear range parameter settings
  • Programming speeds in metric when machine expects imperial units
  • Not accounting for tool-specific speed limitations
