Haas 106 - A SERVO ERROR TOO LARGE | Haas CNC Alarm

A SERVO ERROR TOO LARGE

This alarm indicates the A-axis rotary servo amplifier has detected that the commanded position and actual encoder feedback position differ by more than the allowable threshold. The MOCON board monitors the A-axis rotary table position error and triggers this fault when following error exceeds Parameter 79 limits during programmed or manual moves. Machine motion halts immediately to protect workpiece and tooling from positional errors.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 106 - Turret Indexing Servo Fault typically occurs due to mechanical obstructions, motor issues, or sensor malfunctions during tool indexing on lathes. The most likely fix involves checking for and clearing any obstructions or verifying the turret's unclamping mechanism. If these initial steps don't resolve the issue, deeper electrical or sensor diagnostics may be required.

Safety

  • Tool may not be in position

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Power Down and Inspect

Turn off the machine and lock out power to ensure safety. Visually inspect the turret area for chips, debris, or tools that might be obstructing movement.

Use a flashlight to check hard-to-see areas around the turret housing.

Ensure machine is fully powered down and locked out before inspection to avoid accidental activation.

  2. 2

    Clear Obstructions

Carefully remove any debris or interfering objects using compressed air or a brush. Avoid using excessive force that could damage components.

Document the type and location of debris for future preventive maintenance planning.

Wear safety gloves to protect against sharp chips or edges.

  3. 3

    Test Turret Indexing

Restore power and attempt a manual turret index from the control panel. Observe for smooth operation and listen for unusual noises that might indicate remaining issues.

Run the index at a slow speed initially to monitor for any resistance.

Stand clear of the turret during testing to avoid injury if it moves unexpectedly.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·If motor diagnostics indicate internal failure requiring replacement.
  • ·If hydraulic/pneumatic system issues persist after basic checks and require specialized repair.

Prevention

  • Regularly clean the turret area to prevent debris buildup that can cause obstructions.
  • Schedule routine maintenance checks on hydraulic/pneumatic systems to ensure proper unclamping.
  • Monitor servo motor performance monthly via diagnostics to catch early signs of wear.

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring small debris buildup, assuming it won’t affect turret operation, leading to larger obstructions.
  • Attempting to force the turret to index manually without addressing the root cause, risking further damage.
