This alarm occurs on dual-spindle Haas lathes (DS series) when the sub-spindle has encountered a fault condition or is not responding correctly to control commands. The sub-spindle system includes its own drive, encoder, hydraulic clamp, and proximity switches that must all function properly for part transfer operations. This alarm will prevent sub-spindle indexing, clamping, and part handoff operations until resolved.

Haas Alarm 1010 - Sub Spindle Error
Sub Spindle
This alarm occurs on dual-spindle Haas lathes (DS series) when the sub-spindle has encountered a fault condition or is not responding correctly to control commands. The sub-spindle system includes its own drive, encoder, hydraulic clamp, and proximity switches that must all function properly for part transfer operations. This alarm will prevent sub-spindle indexing, clamping, and part handoff operations until resolved.
Safety
Sub spindle disabled
Common Causes
Sub-spindle encoder has lost feedback signal due to damaged cable, failed encoder, or contamination on encoder disk
Hydraulic pressure for sub-spindle chuck clamping is below minimum threshold or proportional valve is malfunctioning
Sub-spindle drive has faulted due to overcurrent, overtemperature, or phase loss condition during operation
Proximity switches that confirm sub-spindle position (home, advanced, retracted) are misadjusted, damaged, or not providing signal
Z2-axis (sub-spindle carriage) servo amp has faulted or lost communication preventing proper sub-spindle positioning
Troubleshooting Steps
1Step 1: Check Diagnostics screen for sub-spindle encoder feedback and verify counts change smoothly when manually rotating sub-spindle by hand in E-stop
2Step 2: Verify hydraulic pressure gauge reading and test sub-spindle chuck clamp/unclamp function from MDI to ensure hydraulics are operating correctly
3Step 3: Inspect sub-spindle proximity switches with Diagnostics page inputs screen and verify signals change correctly as sub-spindle moves through positions
4Step 4: Check sub-spindle drive display for fault codes and verify all three-phase power is present at drive input terminals with voltmeter
5Step 5: Inspect sub-spindle encoder cable routing from spindle through cable track to control cabinet for damage, proper strain relief, and secure connections
6Step 6: If all external checks pass, suspect Z2 servo amp or sub-spindle drive internal fault - verify drive parameters match machine configuration and replace faulty component
