Haas Alarm 1250 - Side Mount ATC Error

Side Mount ATC Error

This alarm is specific to machines equipped with a side mounted automatic tool changer and indicates the ATC has failed to complete its cycle properly or a sensor has not confirmed expected positioning. The MOCON board sequences the side mount ATC through multiple positions using hydraulic or pneumatic actuators and monitors position switches for each stage. The machine will halt automatic operation until the ATC issue is resolved.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1250 fires when the Side Mount ATC fails to complete any phase of the tool change sequence within the programmed timeout periods defined in parameters 310-319. The NGC control monitors carousel rotation, arm extension/retraction, and gripper actuation through proximity sensors and faults immediately if position feedback is not confirmed.

Safety

  • Tool change blocked
  • ⚠️ TOOL CHANGES DISABLED - Manual intervention required
  • Ensure machine power is OFF and locked out/tagged out before performing any maintenance or repairs on the ATC system.
  • Be aware of potential pinch points and moving parts during ATC operation. Keep hands and clothing clear.
  • If the ATC system uses hydraulics, be aware of the potential for high-pressure fluid leaks. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • If the ATC system uses pneumatics, depressurize the system before disconnecting any air lines.
  • Electrical shock hazard: Disconnect power before working on electrical components. Use proper grounding techniques.
  • Heavy lifting hazard: Use proper lifting techniques or equipment when handling heavy tools or ATC components.
  • Never attempt to manually force the ATC arm or carousel. This could cause damage to the system or injury.
  • Always consult the machine's safety manual before performing any maintenance or repairs.
  • Tool change is blocked; do not attempt manual intervention while powered on.
  • Risk of injury from moving parts; ensure all safety guards are in place.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check ATC Arm Movement

Press HANDLE JOG, then ATC, then use manual ATC functions to test arm extension/retraction. Observe for binding or slow movement.

Ensure spindle is in orient position and no tool is in spindle before manual ATC operations

  2. 2

    Verify Proximity Sensors

Go to SETTINGS > DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS and check status of ATC ARM EXTENDED (PS1) and ATC ARM RETRACTED (PS2) sensors during manual movement.

Sensors should toggle cleanly between ON/OFF states at exact mechanical positions

  3. 3

    Adjust Timeout Parameter

Access SETTINGS > PARAMETERS and increase Parameter 312 (ATC Arm Timeout) from default 8.0 seconds to 12.0 seconds if arm moves slowly but completes cycle.

Only increase timeout after confirming mechanical operation is smooth

  4. 4

    Lubricate ATC Components

Apply light machine oil to arm pivot points and linear bearings. Check pneumatic cylinder for proper air pressure (80-90 PSI).

Power down machine and lock out air supply before servicing pneumatic components

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Mechanical damage to ATC components
  • ·Encoder/sensor replacement required
  • ·Pneumatic system major repairs
  • ·Multiple simultaneous ATC failures

Prevention

  • Perform weekly ATC lubrication per maintenance schedule
  • Keep carousel and gripper area clean of chips
  • Monitor air pressure daily
  • Run ATC test cycle during warm-up routine

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring slow ATC operation until timeout occurs
  • Over-lubricating causing sensor contamination
  • Forcing manual carousel rotation
  • Running ATC with incorrect air pressure
