Haas Alarm 127 - Automatic Tool Changer Not at Home

ATC Home Position

This alarm is triggered when the Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) carousel or arm fails to return to its home position after a tool change cycle, or the home position switch does not activate when expected. The MOCON board monitors the ATC home proximity sensor and generates this fault when position feedback is lost or the carousel does not index to the zero position within the programmed timeout. All tool change operations are disabled until home position is re-established.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 127 occurs when the ATC home position proximity sensor fails to confirm the carousel or arm assembly has returned to its defined home position after tool change completion or during power-up initialization. The NGC control requires this home position signal to maintain accurate tool pocket tracking and prevent potential crashes during subsequent tool changes.

Safety

  • Tool may fall during recovery
  • Follow recovery procedure exactly
  • Ensure machine power is OFF before performing any mechanical inspections or repairs on the ATC
  • Be aware of potential pinch points during ATC movement. Keep hands and fingers clear.
  • If equipped, verify safety interlocks are functioning correctly before attempting ATC operation.
  • High pressure air is used in the ATC system. Depressurize the system before disconnecting any air lines.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) before starting.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check ATC Home Sensor Status

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS > ATC and observe the ATC home position input status while manually positioning the carousel to home.

The home sensor input should toggle clearly between ON/OFF as the flag passes through the sensor gap.

  2. 2

    Inspect Sensor and Flag Alignment

Power down machine and visually inspect the home position proximity sensor and target flag for proper alignment, damage, or debris accumulation.

Ensure main power is OFF and follow LOTO procedures before accessing ATC components.

  3. 3

    Clean and Test Sensor

Clean the sensor face and flag with compressed air, check sensor mounting security, and verify proper gap distance (typically 1-3mm for inductive sensors).

Use a metal feeler gauge to verify the sensor triggers at the correct distance from the flag.

  4. 4

    Verify Sensor Wiring

Check sensor cable connections at both the sensor and control cabinet, looking for loose connections, damaged wires, or corrosion.

Measure sensor supply voltage (typically 24VDC) and signal continuity with a multimeter.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Control board replacement needed
  • ·ATC mechanical rebuild required
  • ·Electrical troubleshooting beyond basic sensor checks

Prevention

  • Regular ATC sensor cleaning during PM cycles
  • Monitor ATC cycle times for gradual increases indicating wear
  • Keep detailed log of ATC parameter changes
  • Inspect ATC drive belt tension monthly

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring intermittent home position issues
  • Adjusting ATC parameters without recording original values
  • Forcing ATC movement when binding is present
  • Replacing sensors without checking mechanical alignment first
