Haas Alarm 1230 - Work Probe Error

Work Probe Error

The MOCON has detected an error with the wireless work probe system during a probing cycle or probe communication attempt. This alarm occurs when the probe fails to transmit a signal when expected, the receiver does not detect the probe trip signal, or there is a battery or communication fault in the wireless probe system. The machine halts motion to prevent collision or incorrect offset measurement.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 1230 fires when the NGC control detects a workpiece probing cycle failure, typically during G65 macro calls to probing subroutines. The alarm triggers when the probe fails to contact within programmed search distances, receives false trigger signals, or experiences communication errors between the probe receiver and control.

Safety

  • Part position unknown
  • ⚠️ CAUTION: Workpiece position is unknown - verify location before continuing machining operations
  • Disconnect power to the machine before performing any electrical troubleshooting.
  • Be aware of moving machine axes during probing cycles. Keep hands and other body parts clear.
  • Use caution when manually triggering the probe to avoid damage to the probe or workpiece.
  • Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured to prevent movement during probing.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, when working with machine tools.
  • Ensure machine is powered off and in a safe state before inspecting parts or probes

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect probe stylus condition

Check stylus for chips, coolant residue, or visible damage. Clean with alcohol and lint-free cloth.

Never touch stylus tip with bare hands - oils can affect conductivity

  2. 2

    Verify stylus straightness

Use dial indicator to check stylus runout. Replace if bent beyond 0.0002" TIR.

Keep spare stylus assemblies calibrated and ready to minimize downtime

  3. 3

    Test probe trigger function

Manually deflect stylus while monitoring probe LED indicator. Should trigger consistently in all directions.

Apply gentle pressure only - excessive force can damage probe mechanism

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter corruption requiring factory reset
  • ·Probe receiver internal failure
  • ·Spindle electrical grounding issues

Prevention

  • Regular stylus cleaning and inspection
  • Validate probing macros in single-step mode
  • Maintain proper cable routing and shielding
  • Document proven work offset values

Common Mistakes

  • Using incorrect search direction parameters
  • Ignoring probe receiver status indicators
  • Mixing probe types without parameter updates
  • Running probing cycles at excessive feedrates
