Fanuc Alarm 5220 - REFERENCE POINT ADJUSTMENT MODE

SYSTEM ALARM 5220

Fanuc alarm 5220: SYSTEM ALARM 5220. This alarm indicates a fault condition detected by the Fanuc control. Refer to the alarm number and name to identify the specific system or function involved.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 5220 indicates the CNC is currently in reference point adjustment mode, which is a special service mode used to establish or recalibrate the machine's reference position. This alarm appears when parameter settings have enabled reference position setting mode, preventing normal machine operation until the reference point is established and the mode is exited.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and access parameter 1815. Check if bit 0 (REF) is set to 1, which enables reference position setting mode.

  2. 2

If reference point adjustment is complete, set parameter 1815 bit 0 to 0 while in parameter write-enable mode (parameter 0000 bit 0 = 1 or key switch in EDIT/WE position).

Ensure reference point has been properly established before disabling this mode, otherwise machine zero position will be lost

  3. 3

Cycle power to the CNC system completely (turn OFF and back ON) to exit reference position adjustment mode and clear the alarm.

  4. 4

After power cycle, perform reference point return on all axes to verify reference position is correctly established. Check POSITION > ABSOLUTE display to confirm coordinates reset to reference position values.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter changes required beyond operator authority
  • ·Encoder battery replacement needed
  • ·PMC ladder logic modifications required

Prevention

  • Monitor encoder battery status regularly
  • Document reference point procedures
  • Train operators on proper mode selection
  • Establish regular reference point verification schedule

Common Mistakes

  • Powering off during reference point adjustment
  • Ignoring encoder battery warnings
  • Not completing adjustment procedures
  • Changing parameters without proper backup
